Gentlemen,

Last night a group of Arfcommers and I were playing World at War on XBox Live against a team that had multiple players ranked top 10 in the world.  After a game while we were all able to communicate in the game lobby, the conversation got a little heated and one of the opposing members told one of our members that he was going to "Crash his XBox console right now."  Approx. 30 seconds later his console crashed.  Can someone tell me how he possibly did this, or was it just coincidence?

FWIW - The same douchebag told me he was hacking my CC info (which is also in XBox's system) but no unexpected account activity yet.

Some of the more computer savvy guys were discussing some DOS method they might have used - but that's WAY outta my lane.

Sure it's possible.  If I told you all about everything I've seen done or know about being done, it would blow your freaking mind.

Yeah, just call and report him.  Reporting people is not difficult.

Card info, chances are slim to zilch. No worries.

DOS-ing the console out, hardly out of the question. All you need is the other side's IP address and knowledge of a security vulnerability in the protocol.
Theoretically this could be done with a hacked console or a packet analyzer, or it could just be a bug in the game that they know how to exploit.

Report to customer service, definitely, but canceling your card is just extreme.

DOS attack- meh, reboot.

dont cancel your card.  Your card issuer has your back if there are any questionable charges.

Anytime you deal with technology you run the risk of people doing stupid things to your hardware/software if you share a network with them.  Thats just the way it is.

DOS = Denial of Service....its possible there are ways to DOS a box if you know the IP (which isn't too hard.)  But that is completely a seperate issue then having your CC info comp'd.  I think you're ok.

Yeah - I'm not sweating he CC issue - just wanted to know how hard it would be, or if it was even possible for him to cause a console to reboot from afar.

was there a specific error on the console, or did he just have to restart the game because of major lag?

causes:

idea 1: prolly some kind of flood vs. his internet connection.  easy to do it you know an external IP of a small time user and have a botnet,
idea 2: portscanned the friend's external IP and found a remote management port open w/default settings, logged into his router and rebooted it from there, or formulated some other attack through the router, like flooding whatever port the xbox was using with bad packets.

the card talk is just talk.  they 'd have to catch the card info being transmitted and break some nasty encryption to do that.  NO wai.

some of those "top ten" players were probably in the same room/house and yelled downstairs to their h4X0R buddie to reach out and touch your friend.  I wouldn't worry, but I also wouldn't talk shit.  That kind of crap just takes you off your game.

That's fucked up! What kind of crash was it - RROD, freeze, or shutdown?  Do you know his gamer tag?

probably a DDoS attack... google pulled up a bunch of articles...

it is no different than someone doing it to your home PC, all you really need to do is find the target's IP address... since you pretty much have to run your xbox outside of the firewall (DMZ) to find games in matchmaking, you are wide open to these types of attacks...

the CC thing i wouldn't worry about too much, BUT i wouldn't keep my CC on file with MS period. use prepaid live cards for both membership and points...
i am still trying to fix an issue where my wife's account was due to auto-renew and i let it expire to silver, well apparently if you put a CC on file, it doesn't work like that and they lock and fuck up your account... remove your windows live id and disassociate it with your gamertag... it's really fucking annoying...

if i were a bad hacker, i would first try to find your windows live id (easily obtained from the overseas phone support), then using the windows live website attempt to do some password recoveries, send you phishing emails, or brute force the password assuming that you probably made it pretty simple when you setup live...  then from there i could login to billing.microsoft.com and see all of your payment methods associated with your account, i could also then recover your gamertag to my console, change the windows live id to something random, then use your good windows live id with my own gamertag and buy tons of points, memberships, etc...

its really not that far fetched or difficult to do...

- stop using your CC use prepaid XBL cards
- use a strong windows live id password, you only have to enter it once on your console. 14 characters, 2 specials, 2 digits, 2 upper case, nothing easily guessable.
- set up strict privacy settings to make it more difficult for people to guess your information
- stop arguing with little retards online...

It just rebooted his console - no error code or damage.  His GT was Irishbadazz IIRC.

We're actually a VERY polite clan to play against.  Win or lose we always congratulate the other team in the game lobby.  Sometimes people aren't raised right, and we try to remind them of the old "age & treachery" adage by acting like immature asses ourselves.   It's like a hockey fight - sometimes it can change the tide of the game, and honestly, we have some pretty sinister old dudes on our team that can lay it down.  I'm not kidding when I tell you we made a 15 year old boy cry - and he deserved that and more.  I'd love to play everytime against people that were cool, but like the internet, you WILL get some douchebags.  I couldn't even begin to post half the shit that is said in Ed Sr's Bear Pit without getting banned - let's just say it's pretty raw.

i am just picking on you... i just had a L4D rant last night, where i lost it on some idiots who just can't comprehend that in VERSUS the object is TO WIN, which means as the survivors getting to the safe room as quickly as possible with as little damage as possible... and they all stood together in a room while i rushed the safe room and cleared a path for them...

i hate when they shut the door prior to healing, since you get new med packs at the start of the next chapter, and the closer you are to 100 health, the higher points you have...

Ahhhhh - so you know the joys of having teen tards telling you what they "did to your mom last night" between matches too?  We look at our verbal smack downs as doing this country a service by showing future generations the error of their ways, since their parents obviously aren't interested.

they are terrible... my friends cousin is one of those teen maniacs...
at times it is humorous to hear him shit talking another team... especially when i agree with the topic (ie: glitching)

my favorite gem was this kid asking how to do some glitch in the lobby... and the cousin gave the kid a step by step of bullshit instructions (press X and up, then unplug your headset, etc) which ended with "now pop open your cd-rom drive and break your disk in half because you fucking suck you cheater piece of shit"

then other times its like these kids have a contest to see who can fill the headset with bullshit constantly and it gets really old really quick... there is a special circle of hell reserved for the kids that play music into their headsets...

CoD4 was so bad that i set my voice preferences to friends only, now with the party system i can just party up with friends, and ignore the idiots, and if my friends aren't on i can test the waters and adjust my headset volume accordingly...
