So I have an old p4 syste setup as a htpc.  The thing randomly restarts, but only when it's not being used. Like we turn off the tv at night, Firefox might be open. Migh not. Folders open or not. Media player classic may be open or not.  It seems to do it say....4 nights a week.

New psu, new video card, new mother board, new DVD drive, new processor, more/new memory, all in trying to make it into a capable htpc. Works great in that capacity.  The video card decodes 1080p great. Bla bla bla.

I'd just like to figure out the sleepy time restart thing because in my past computer expierence this tells me it may be a symptom of a larger issue that
May get worse.

Its past life was as a gaming pc built in 2003 as super high end.  It has a Sata 10,000 rpm raptor 34 gig hd that is orignal to the built. Passes all tests and works great.  It's old as hell as far as hard drives go. So maybe. The new mother board was installed two weeks ago after the original motherboards voltage regulator died.  It seems to do it less now but still waiting to pass judgement.

Temps are normal, the case has 6 fans, 7 if you count the psu. 4 in two out.  The processor has a sp-94 processor hsf and it stays frosty.  The hd4650 video card has an aftermarket zalman cooler on it so it stays cool.  (a bunch of fans turned down low stay quiet with a fair amount of airflow so it works well.  I can turn them up if need be but it never gets above 67c with prime 95 running with the fans on low.

Windows xp, comodo, avira anti virus, newest drivers, newest bios. I dunno.

UPDATE.  makes sense when you think about it, it only happens when the thing sits and isnt used.    its an old 8x agp card.  hd4650.   not that old at all, but as its x8, it has no real support from ati.  they have drivers, but they are untested, and un verified.  i couldnt even get the newest ones to run on this XP machine.  so.  i turned off the "turn off monitor" settings in power management.  apperently, it doesn't play well with something.  it was set for 5 hours. i bet this thing was restarting every 5 hours. lol.

anyways. fixed.  i turn the tv off when not in use just as you would any tv so i m not worried about screen burn. its lcd too anyways.

im guessing memory.   either the ram on the video card or the computers memory.

if you have onboard video try that for a while.

you might leave the computer running a bootable linux cd to see if its a windows issue or hardware issue

I agree, leave it booted to something else. like I left mine booted to bios.
figured out it was a flaky power supply.
it will randomly drop out and reboot.

Turn off the "automatic reboot on fail" option so you can see what the blue-screen is saying.  That will help make a lot of headway on what is going wrong.

Here's how change this setting:
