I found an abandoned kitten a little while ago and I have no idea what to do with it.
It has recently opened its eyes (one actually is still closed), I've never really dealt with this kind of thing before but I'm trying to save it if at all possible. What can I do? |

It has recently opened its eyes (one actually is still closed), I've never really dealt with this kind of thing before but I'm trying to save it if at all possible. What can I do? Go to pet store; they will have nursing milk that you mix with water. Feed to kitten with small nursing bottle. Did this for two kittens abandoned by mother for my Mom years ago. Cats grew up together (brothers) and my Mom loved the heck out of them. Do not give cow's milk. Not good for cats in general, and absolutely not what newborn kittens need. And yes, at that young an age, you'll imprint, and you can train them to be any sort of cat you want. E. |

Pics? I want to see why one eye is still closed, possible infection if it's actually more than a couple few weeks old. Have a vet check the kitten out and see if it is truly too young to be off the mother's milk and if there's any other problems, then raise it. I'm not with it at the moment , it is very young, can't stand yet. |

It probably wasn't abandoned, momma probably watched you steal it. Now you have to bottle feed it every two hours. Get the to a PetCo or PetSmart and ante-up. Go to a cat lady site for details. It was dropped at the back door, all by itself. ETA: we think another cat stole it actually. |

He/she should still be on the mother's milk for the antibodies which are necessary to build the immune system. |

Keep it warm, get an eyedropper and some goat's milk at the grocery store tonight (actual kitten nursing kit at PetSmart or PetCo tomorrow). Feed every few hours, followed by wiping the kitten's backside with a warm, wet washcloth until it poops. Listen to her. |

As already said: vet, ASAP.
Water or cat formula as already said--dropper or bottle. My wife found a kitten at work as you describe, and couldn't open one eye due to a viral infection. She took some TLC, but ultimately was one of the sweetest lil' critters I've ever known. We had her for about 12 years & still miss her she was a great kitty. Unless you're truly heartless, you now have a new friend Good on you for taking on this new critter. |

I took in a stray kitten five years ago. She has yet to show the slightest gratitude, and is just an all round self-involved bitch. |

I was out in the field last May when I heard a cat meowing and looked down to see a tortoise shell cat come hopping up............she had been abused or something because her shoulder was messed up and one front leg had atrophied. I opened the door to my work truck to get her some water, and she decided to get in and wouldn't get out..............so, needless to say, Maggie now lives with us and our other cat, and she is extremely loyal............

Yep. My cat was about 10 weeks old when I took him in. I never knew cats could be so loyal. Quoted:

Sorry, brother...but animal shelter is the most humane thing at this point. |

When I worked mall security, someone abandoned a kitten in the mall. I ended up keeping her. Mighty nice of you to pick up where the bastage left off. Thanks. I did a thread about it. Have to see if I can find it. |

We took in a kitten found running in traffic on a Saturday night in downtown Bernalillo NM- should have been a grease spot.
Maybe 6 weeks old. After lots of care, she's with us today after 16 years. Most ungrateful, spiteful, ill-tempered bitch I've ever known. Sleeps between my ankles every night. And I dearly love the little shit.

I put similar pics up in a craigs list "found kitten" ad a couple of years ago. The local animal control officer who responded with a threatening email turned out to have gone through the ACO course with me. Fun times when I next saw him. |

Here we go. I hate people who abandon animals.

| Good advice here. Definitely avoid cow's milk but DO feed kitten milk replacement. In a week or so, you can mix wet cat food with kitten milk replacement in a 1:1 ratio for an excellent food source for kitteh. Feed every 1.5 - 2 hours. Wash kitteh's butt with warm, wet washcloth after every meal to encourage elimination. Keep kitteh warm. |

We had a feral cat around the house recently. Just starting leaving food out for it because hey, we like cats. Neighbors did as well, so no one was bothered by it. One random day it showed up with kitten in tow. The kitten was no more than a month old. The feral mom had just left it somewhere for hours at a time while it hung around our house. Some days she'd being the kitten, other days she'd be solo again. They are both currently in our basement. I captured them about a week ago. I'm going to keep the kitten. When the kitten no longer needs mom around, mom will get spayed and released. I'd try to find someone to take in the mom, but she is full feral. So just going to make her pregnancy-proof. Kitten is young enough that it will be easy to tame. EDIT - Nevermind, the mom cat wouldn't have left it on your porch. That cat was too young for mom to be moving around. She would have left it off at the nest. |

I never knew cats could be so loyal. Mine came up to me at the range last September and wouldn't leave us alone. He'd follow us downrange to set up targets, hide under a truck during shooting and come right back to the line when we went cold. He hung around for a good 2-3 hours. As we were packing up he kept jumping in the rifle cases and range bags trying to catch a lift, so I gave him one. |
