If the bad guy had the drop on him, giving the keys would have been the right choice. Few people would be able to draw and shoot quickly enough and consistently enough. Material objects can be replaced. If the aggressor has not yet established an advantage or loses an advantage, by all means draw and fire.
ETA - I assume the guy was single. If I was being forced into my home with family inside, I would do all I could to kill the aggressor and keep my family safe. |

Almost put a JHP through my monitor when this loser said, "I'm not gonna stand for it... we're gonna fight 'em."
He let the scumbag INTO HIS FUCKING HOME!!!! Yes no way I open my door and let the asshole in. 9/10 times my fiancée is gonna be in the house already. Ill die on the front porch before I open a secured house and let who know what happen to my fiancée. |

Based on the other articles and news reports, his partner was in the house. If true, I would have fought back or died trying. Even if I lost, the gunshots would have at least alerted my wife inside and provided her precious seconds to arm herself and get help. Would have likely caused the perp to flee as well leaving my wife safe. |

Granted, everyone in GD is the John Wayne/Clint Eastwood fastest draw in the West with the situational awareness of a panther, so we NEVER have to worry about this. Amirite?
I think that ability is bestowed upon you when you sign up for your free account or after your first post. But for the common folk you have to decide, while in the situation, what is the best answer. You can't outdraw everyone. Sometimes it's best to not draw. |
|
This is why you keep your car keys and wallet in pockets on one side, and a gun on the other side. Reach into both pockets pretending to search for keys, pull out keys and dangle them at arms length, draw and fire while the perp is focused on the keys. It's a good plan in theory, I imagine the stress of being in the situation might make things a bit harder to pull off, however. Agreed with other posters, though. If my family is in the house, no way I'm letting that guy through the door.

I practice drawing quite often, and I carry OWB. I'm not saying I'd beat a drawn gun with mine in the holster, but I'd damn sure try that before I let anybody into my house. My wife and kids are in there. I'm not so sure you couldn't beat a drawn gun, either. You pulling a gun is going to be a MAJOR change of plans for the guy holding you, might just lock him up long enough to start getting rounds in him before he can react.
Situational awareness is key. See shit coming before hand, and a good WolfStare (tm) can often cut things off before they begin.

Agreed! Here is the street view of his house. The victim said he was taking out the trash when he was approached.

Guy is alive, so he obviously made the right choice. |

Drawn gun beats a holstered gun 10 times out of 10 This. But this is ArfCom. Home of the armchair gunfighting expert. If most here do what they say they would in that situation, they would have eaten four rounds right in the chest trying to blade at 45. |

What percentage of cops have ever actually been in a gunfight? There aren't many guys like "Jelly" Brice out there. He was an expert gunfighter. Are you saying you'd let some guy into your house with your wife inside? I know I'd take my chances and bet on the bad guy being a fuck-up at gunfighting. Guys doing armed robbery have fucked up at everything else in their life, they might fuck up at gunfighting too. Even if they don't, I'd rather "eat four rounds right in the chest" than live like that poor bastard in Connecticut who got to watch his wife and daughters get raped in front of him, then get burned alive. |

It sounds like a few of you carry 100% of the time. At least that is your internet assertion which cannot be proven.
Perhaps a poll on whether people carry 100% of the time is in order. Or at least do you carry 100% of the time at home? I know that I do not and feel no need to. At this moment I do have a 9 mm and a 22 rifle within eight feet...Not because of paranoia...just the current placement of those items. |

Drawn gun beats a holstered gun 10 times out of 10 Not necessarily I agree, the average person can't hit crap with a pistol. Chances are this guy isn't at the range every weekend. If you're practiced at drawing, firing and hitting you have a fair chance of beating him to the punch. However, you have to accept that rounds will be coming your direction and a lucky shot from him can kill you just as dead as an aimed one. So in cases where you can, I would say let the insurance company sort things out and live to fight another day. |

Alot of brain trusts in here. ![]() You seriously think you'll beat a guy to the punch if he has a right drawn and pointed right at your face while your gun is holstered? Unless you are the Flash, 99% of the time, you will end up assuming room temperature if you tried drawing a gun on a guy who already has his finger on the trigger and the barrel on your temple. |

My neighbors are beans and corn. And, yes, I carry all the time. Why take chances when it isn't necessary? |
