This is an interesting point you make for several reasons.
First off, I believe that there are curses associated with cursing God by taking His name in vain. In the old testament book of Leviticus chapter twenty-four, verse sixteen it states; ''Whoever blastphemes the name of the LORD is to be put to death; the whole community must stone him. If he blastphemes the Name, he is to be put to death, whether the foreign resident or the native.'' Also in Job, chapter two, verses, three through five it also states; Then the Lord said to Satan,''Have you considered my servant Job? No one else on earth is like him, a man of perfect integrity, who fears God and turns away from evil. He still retains his integrity, even though you incited Me against him to destroy him without just cause.'' ''Skin for skin!'' Satan answered the LORD.''A man will give up everything he owns in exchange for his life. But stretch out Your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse You to Your face.'' And also in verse nine;''His wife said to him,''Do you still retain your integrity? Curse God and die!'' These Scriptures kind of speak for themselves don't you think? Thanks, SAE |

so you take the fact that i use the "lord's" name in vain as evidence that god exists You are correct. I do believe it is proof. As for your theory about it being a produce of your environment........that is probably true, but only to the point of...........someone had to hear it from someone, had to hear it from someone, had to hear it from someone, and says it. This, however, does not account for the FACT that it is the names of "Jesus Christ" and "God", that are used as the cuss words. I believe it is more prevelant, and sadly tolerated, in our modern times, because of the times we are in. (That's been discussed in others threads and I am not looking to flow it over into this one) My point is simply this, of all the "Gods" people do and have believed in, throughout all time, none of "their" names have been used as cuss words.....as Jesus Christ and God, has been. SAE quoted some very good verses to this fact. Satan is no idiot! But, I do think he may have tripped up on this matter by causing mankind to choose these names to express their disrespect.....disgust.......anger.......and rage. You don't even hear the "names" of the most evil people on planet earth being used as cuss words to make these expressions! If you think about it, only one conclusion comes up........Satan gave us proof that God and Jesus Christ are in fact, who the Bible says they are. OR you could reason that all of what is good in our world is credited to god. so, when someone has something bad happen they turn to the source that was supposed to make life worth living and curse god for god's lack of attention. I mean a person should give credit where credit is due ("praise jesus") and hold those accountable for their wrong doings. |

Okay then, if that's what you feel good with, go with it ~ I feel good with words being words and carrying very little meaning beyond allowing us to communicate thoughts, feelings etc. I was presenting a counter argument to hear your opinion on it. |

Good point. I hadn't thought f it but you never hear Budda dam it, Muhammed dam it, etc. You do from Jeff Dunham and Achmed the Dead Terrorist:
Achmed the Dead Terrorist on Youtube But yea, that's pretty deep. |

Because you live in an english speaking country. You'd say other things if you lived in tibet or syria. Just because a different "language" is used, does not mean that the same "names" are not being used. I have friends from other countries.....France, South Africa, Germany, Brazil, South Korea and Viet Nam. They use, or are aware of the use, of these same names (God and Jesus Christ) being used as cuss words.......only in their "language". Im sorry - its not nit picking. I am a believer in the Lord - but eventually you got to grow up, get off the milk, eat some meat and be a student of the word you faithfully believe in. Read the preface of your Bible next time and you should see your Bible states, God is not nor was never His name. Satan is called the god of this world, so is his name god? Moses was called a god, is his name god or moses. If you think Satan supplied proof of Gods existence- here is better reasoning than the logic you mentioned. You unwittingly just demonstrated how he has attempted to erase the name of God from mankind's tongue - but left his name, Lucifer and HaSatan well known through out the world - all while leaving the Almighty's name absent. But God speaks of his people forgetting His name in Jer: 23:27 - and today- mankind has done it again. I do refer to our Lord and Saviour as Jesus - but you may already know this - their wasn't even a letter J around the time he was born, but since most people nowadays have grown up with the transliteration of Jesus to refer to our Lord, that is also how I refer to him as well. But I also have no problem with people who call him by the name Yeshua. Go to some South American countries and you will will see it written and pronounced Iesous - much like it was written in the 1611 King James. God was not refered to as God - it is only because you live and speak in English (muslims call allah God, etc. etc.) - and that is how you are reading a translation. WOuldnt you rather have and worship a God with a NAME? A NAME ABOVE ALL NAMES? Elohim may have been used to address Him, or His NAME YHVH - but God is just a transliteration of Elohim - which means mighty one - and God himself calls Moses a Elohim. Sorry its not nit picking - its just reality. I admire your enthusiasm - but proof may perhaps be absent - and faith ever so present. You will do well to know the name of your Creator - as well as your Saviour. But in terms of God and Salvation, proof is not essiential, only often desired. blessed [are] they that have not seen, and [yet] have believed |
| i try very hard to confine my outward expressions to be "yeay, yeay" or"'nay, nay".I was a military person for some time and created habits that I consider to be improper and just wrong. I slip on these things but agreeing or disagreeing with what happened is not blasphemous. "Yes!" or "No!" yelled at the top of your lungs won't cause anyone to look at you crossly in public. Anything Satan can do to diminish the authority and power of God is his goal. Within him even there is some truth, so beware. He is not always wrong. |
| ...Oh and I forgot. God in the way we use it is a title. Christ and Holy Spirit are titles as well. Christ means 'the sacrifice'- a term used to discribe as well as name him. At the time of his birth, he would have been called Jesus, son of Joseph the carpenter from Nazareth. In many places of the bible New Testament he was indeed refered to as " Jesus of Nazareth". Yes indeed they have names. As do we to name ourselves. |

It does strike one as odd that Jesus and Jesus Christ be used as a curse in American English.... (in Spanish, French and Italian the 'curses' are much more colorful and more, well, blasphemous...in English the naughty words are either bedroom or bathroom related (which is sort of funny when you think about it). In the Romance languages curses and PUT DOWNS are much more involved, much more 'in your face' sort of things....about the closest we get to it is "M-Fer".
But getting back to the point of using Jesus' name in vain.... in exorcisms and healings his Name has power. Power that invoking any other name simply doesn't have. Now maybe this only 'works' for a former Christian who was possessed...I don't know. But I do know demonic possession, while EXTREMELY RARE, does happen and the thing that makes the poor person do things they couldn't possibly do or say things in languages they couldn't possibly know (and with perfect accents) don't like the name of Jesus. Or his Mom. The power of God is no where seen more evident that when the power of evil seems to have won supreme. One might be agnostic as to 'why' but not 'what' works. The story about Jesus being asleep in the boat while it was tossed about on the "sea" of Galillee... where he woke up and 'rebuked the wind and waves' and they obeyed him....for the ancient reader or listener of that story the gods Zeus (sky) and Posidon (sea) were the two most powerful gods of the pagan pantheon...so if this guy Jesus could shut them up with a mere word of command the implication was, he was more real, more powerful, a 'bigger' being than they were. Exorcisms (driving out what isn't material), healing (instantaneous re-arrangement of the material world in the proper order [health]) and multiplication of food (creation ex nihilo of matter) all made the early witnesses go "huh" and conclude... this guy isn't a magician, he's not an angel in disguise, or a demi-god.... he's doing things only one being known to man could do....and that being is ippsum esse subsistens...or "I Am". Heavy stuff. But then there's nothing heavier than "God" and knowing how to address him *(although "sir" works too! |
