I can watch and enjoy animated stuff; I mean, for all intents and purposes CGI is a cartoon.

But the Japanese stuff, even if it has a good story, is done in a style I find to be hard to watch.

It's Attack on Titan.

It's a good series, but I wouldn't call it the best since Akira. Neon Genesis Evangelion and the Ghost in the Shell series were damn good animation and plot-wise.

Ghost in the Shell was/is amazing, I own it. This series blows it out of the water.

WARNING-
They have not even finished writing the series, so they have no idea when it will be finished

If you start, be prepared to hit a cliffhanger, for possibly years. That said, it's real good, I watched it on crunchy roll a while ago

NGE is absolutely fantastic.  I watched it back in college and really got immersed in the underlying themes and various religious references.  There used to be (probably still are) a bunch of sites trying to interpret everything.  Good stuff.  And in actually got to see Ghost in the Shell at a theater when it was released, that was great.  Might have to check out Titans too.  Never heard of it.

Been on hulu for a while. Great show. However everyone needs to be warned that the agi doesn't finish the story. It ends abruptly and you have to go to the manga for answers.

At least give Cowboy Bebop(making space westerns cool before Firefly was even a thing) and Black Lagoon a try.

I am very excited to report that one of the most memorable Japanese anime series  I have seen in years "Attack on Titan" is now on Netflix, the animation, artwork, story and character depth is absolutely stunning and a true masterpiece. A word of caution for the faint of heart, the series is particularly ultra violent with extreme scenes of gore.  Here's a trailer for those interested:

I have never once seen a dubbed movie, live-action or animated, that was better than the original audio with subtitles.

A couple have been decent.  Princess Mononoke comes to mind.  At least they made a good effort.  But the original audio is better.

Quite a few, very good, anime series out there.

Other than Netflix;  hulu, crackle, crunchyroll, anime44, animefreak, animeseason, are other sites that have loads of anime series and movies.  Yeah, there's quite a few 'hokey' ones, still, a lot of gems out there.

I have found that the sub'd ones are almost always better.  Sometimes comedic when the translator is a bit off.

I can't get into AoT. Then again I can't get into most "new" anime these days.

I blame myself for watching anime since the 80s... once you've seen waaaaaay too much anime it takes something really, really special to get my attention anymore. AoT doesn't pass that test for me. It's decent, but it is by no means the "best" of anime. The last "best" category anime I remember watching was Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex.

I like some cartoons.  Warner brothers, Archer, South Park, etc.

Had some friends that were into the anime back in the 80s and 90s and I saw a number of them.  Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Fern Valley or Gulch or some shit like that, Outlanders, plus a bunch of others.  They would go on and on about how great the animation was.  The animation itself sucked in all of them, they just had good attention to detail in the drawings.  Never was much of a fan.  Later in the late 90s I saw some ninja one that I don't remember the name of, it was pretty much the same.  The same guys talked up the movie Highlander all the time.  When I finally saw it-

Yeah I agree with this. Ghost in the Shell was awesome! As was Evangelion. Ummm of course you have Cowboy Bebop, Tank Girls ;) As well as many others I think even the neck beards here would like if they could bring themselves to try something new other than hoarding 22lr.

Same here. I don't know what it is about all "new style" anime, but I hate it all. It's too bright and colorful, the characters are all weird looking with big eyes. I like the dark, more adult looking anime of the 80's and 90's. I've tried to hard to get into the new stuff, I just can't. I make the connection of "old" anime, is like the new Batman trilogy, very dark and adult oriented, and "new" anime, is like the older batman movies (like the one with Arnold and Val Kilmer in it), very childish and cartoony. Are there any new series that are drawn and feel like the old stuff?
