[rant] It almost seems we get more worked up over "stolen" avatars than weapons here. If they are not in your direct control, it is your responsibility to secure your weapons from theft or other forms of unauthorized access, IMO. Don't wait. Do it today! Buy a cabinet, bolt it to the wall and/or floor, use a cable to lock the weapons together and to the eyebolt in the wallstud, or buy a safe and use it. Nothing is foolproof, but every little bit helps. Help prevent those robberies that leave guns in the hands of people who shouldn't have them. And, yes, it can happen to YOU! In addition, in 1998 and 1999, more than 27,000 firearms were reportedly stolen from licensed gun dealers and more than 3,700 firearms stolen from common carriers who transport guns. Obviously, these stolen guns go directly into the hands of criminals. - Data from a national survey of incarcerated criminals indicate the prominent role theft plays in arming criminals. When asked how they obtained their most recent firearm, 10% reported stealing it and an additional 8% reported buying it from a “fence” — someone who sells stolen goods. But surveys of criminals clearly understate the importance of gun theft in arming criminals. Many of the individuals who sell guns to criminals also sell stolen goods. For example, 21% of armed criminals obtained guns from groups known to steal guns, such as drug dealers, addicts, and other street sources. - More than a quarter of all guns connected with Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) investigations of illegal gun trafficking were reported to have been stolen. When I get my new apartment, I am going to find a place to put a safe, and get a small safe. I just realize that I have way too much gun stuff all over my apartment (including guns) that it scares me to think about what would happen if someone broke in. I won't be able to bolt the safe down, but at least having one is a serious deterrant. |

I'd suggest a closet, or somewhere out of sight. Also, consider lag bolts into the wall or floor (or both!) if you can find something to screw them into. Then just patch the holes when you leave with spackle. No harm, no foul. If it's stuck in a corner, bolt it to two wals, or one wall and a floor to make it most solid. Or, try other fasteners, like molly bolts or some such thing. You're not necessarily trying to permanently fix it to the floor/wall, but to prevent someone from easily tipping it over onto a handcart and walking out the door with it. Good luck! |

Yep, this was a big decision for me. I spent around $1,800 for a big safe. It is full. I finally realized that if I was going to have this hobby, I needed a safe. I have home insurance that would cover the theft of the guns, but as most of you will appreciate, some of my stuff has sentimental value. And some of it simply can't be replaced. (They quit making brand-new Remington 03-A3's a long time ago.) The safe is also good for safe-keeping of birth certificates, wills, and other important papers. A word of advice....safes are actually pretty easy to move over carpet that's on a slab. You just tilt it up a little and put a bunch of golf balls under it. Push it around and pick up the balls that come out the back end and place them under the front. |

i have a very small house here is what i did. I took the closet in my office and installed one of those homak gun lockers. Cost is around 50.00 for an 8 rifle steel cabniet. Bolted it to the studs on the wall from insde the cabinet and placed about 60lbs of weight in the bottom. I then put an exterior door with a deadbolt lock on the closet door. All said about 175.00 out of pocket. It is not a safe and like anything can be deafeated by a determined individual. But by god they are going to have to work for it. mike |

I finally had to buy a safe when I couldn't fit any more guns under my bed. And it's a king size! [:D] Seriously, you absolutely should have one, even if you have just one gun. And now that I have a baby on the way, it gives me even more peace of mind. Don't forget you perimeter - deadbolts, alarm system, dogs, etc. |

and whatever you do DONT SHOW THEM OFF TO STRANGERS! I know theyre beautful pieces of machinery and should be proudly displayed, but there are way too many aholes with little regard for your stuff. I know how easy it can be to have a buddy over from work and you show him your xyz made 1911 or ar. In this day and age with so many miscreants and assorted baddies we dont know who we can trust. |

They are great if you have a huge walk in closet. They are also pretty easy to move. The weight is tolerable. I think they are perfect for apartments. Edited to add: I shoulda read TBS posts. He has the same set up |

Along these same lines. . . I'm trying to find those combination Clock Radio/Gun Safes to secure my home defense weapon. My old roomate bought one a few years ago and I think it's a great idea. I didn't hav ethe cash then or I would have gotten one. Now I can't find them, I have a Homak cabinet bolted to my wall for everything else. I just hate the idea of someone accidentally finding my loaded Glock. |

Recommend that you Bolt a piece of PLY-wood to the closet wall, to reinforce it, then bolt the safe to it. I know some people like to keep most of their guns locked but keep ONE in the closet or in the drawer UNSECURED AND LOADED. That is Being Willfully Wishing Ignorant. Buy a Low-security (homak) safe for the closet, Lock it when you leave and UNlock it when you get Home. DO you Leave your House Unlocked when you Leave for Work, Why should you leave the Guns Unlocked. I think it all apart of the anti-Freedom group to DUMB down America, to leave their Guns unlocked and easily Stolen. DO NOT Give them more Ammunition, locked your Weapons. * Arsenal Licensing (for possession of multiple guns and large amounts of ammunition) 4 Reduction of the number of guns to require an Arsenal license Right now the proposed Arsenal licenses which Senator Feinstein should be pushing for, requires an "Arsenal License" for those people who feel they need more than 20 guns and 1000 rounds of ammunition. We feel that number is too generous, due to the fact that any number of guns constitutes a grave threat to the safety of the community, we suggest strongly that this license limit be reduced to possession greater than 5 guns and 250 rounds of ammunition. 7 Requirement of Federally Approved Storage Safes for all guns We should follow Great Britain's lead on this. All licensed gunowners should be required to have a storage safe which meets minimum federally mandated requirements. This step would reduce the tragic accidents which claim the lives of tens of thousands of children a year and make it more difficult for burglars to steal the guns. 8 Inspection License Another good revenue source would be mandatory inspection licensing of all safes. Each safe would be registered with a specific serial number and the serial numbers and types of weapons stored should be on file with federal and state authorities. Since unannounced inspectors can insure that all declared weapons are being properly stored, all safe licenses should have an additional yearly fee to offset the cost of these spot inspections.
