okay gun freaks, tell me why I should spend good money to buy an AK-47?
7/26/2004 7:12:48 AM EDT
[#1]
They're a lot of fun to shoot and ammo is cheap.  Plus the gubmint says they're evil. That automatically makes it attractive.

what needs to be said

Edit- when you have to kill every last mother fucker in the room

[pedanticmode=ON] An AK-47 is a government-taxed NFA weapon. It's made with a milled receiver, and as far as I know, very few true legally owned AK-47's exist in the US. Most were bringbacks from Vietnam. [pedanticmode=OFF]

If you mean one of the civilian copies of the AKM, such as a SAR-1 or something...why not. They're cheap, they work, and it's cheap to feed.

how are ak47's a violation of the NFA

True AKs are either automatic or select fire, IIRC.  That means the NFA regulates them.
7/26/2004 7:22:16 AM EDT
[#7]
ok i agree, i thought you were saying that most semi auto civi's were a violation
7/26/2004 7:25:46 AM EDT
[#8]
AK-type semi-auto:

Pros:

Fun to shoot...

Serves the same purpose as a tommy gun or M1 Carbine, but much cheaper, lighter, and cheaper to feed... Basically, it's a SMG, but with a more powerful cartridge than 'common' pistol ammo.

Almost all of them come with built-in optics rails, and ex-Soviet optics deliver decent quality without the absurd price of western models...

Cons:

They get really hot when you shoot them, and the 'classic' wood-furnature without heat shields has been known to catch fire during continued use...

Not as accurate as an AR (see the first 'Pro', it was never designed for precision use)...

Get one... Every gun collection needs an AR, AK, 1911, and some pistol in 7.62x25

here's my recipe for AK bliss
buy one,
build the second

you will be hooked after this.

and think about it, you can shoot wolf ammo through the damn things all week long and not worry a bit!

okay, how cheap is the ammo?
7/26/2004 7:35:56 AM EDT
[#12]
not always accurate but i find consistant.  like mine at 100yds will shoot about 5in to the left but if i compensate(welded sight, can adjust) i can make very accurate shots and ive gotten so used to it, it makes no differance to me anymore

-you can usually get about 1000 wolf for $70-80
at least where i am

Because you can do THIS for less than $500.

The HBAR in that pic now exists as parts in two seperate AR's.  But the WASR-10 Hi-cap AK is still in one piece.  Seems like I can't put 500 rounds through an AR-15 without taking the sucker apart and rebuilding it in another configuration.  Which is one of the reasons I have six AR's but only one AK.  But I do agree that every collection needs at least one AK, AR and 1911. Ak's are fun cheap shooters.

Depends on how much you are willing to spend.SAR-1 is the best for the least amount of money IMHO.

I have a 2001 model SAR-1. It has straight sights and runs like a sewing machine on steroids!
I have about 10,000 rounds through mine and it has yet to fail in any way shape or form. The hand gaurd gets so hot after a few hundred rounds the varnish melts and the wood smokes.
The only mods I made were tuning the trigger to get the "slap" out, and the addition of an Ergo grip (I hate the skinny plastic grip they come with.)
After my AR15, this gun would be the last to go.

MAC, did you see the pics I took after I got the SAR-2 refinished?  I also got an illuminated reticle PSO scope for it awhile back for $89 which kicks the fun factor way up.  Of course I still have the Kobra sight as well.

i'm surprised no one said "because you can!!!"

and AtLarge [Romanian SAR-1 for $279] - are you sure that is not a WASR-10??? that seems to be the price for the wasr's - if it is indeed for a SAR-1, don't dick around because at that price, it won't last.

I'll second that. There ain't no AK (well, technically, RPK) with finer build quality for anywhere near the price. A Cadillac at Buick prices.

Correct. They are based on the RPK reciever, which is .5 mm thicker than the AK reciever. Also, the plastic furniture is the best that I have seen on a gun for shielding heat. The only drawback is the weight, but with the new "tactical furniture", they have probably reduced the weight quite a bit.
