the temperance movement was all about progressive thought and not about reality.

back then, those that worked earned.  yes, there were alcoholics but they were overrepresented in the media.  so women who had problems with those entered the view of the press.

alcohol, being common to the european life, had eliminated most genotypes incompatible with alcohol.  until the injection into the american genome.

yes, there are those incompatible with alcohol.  even those of pure european stock as hybrids will express with propensity to alcohol sensitivity.

I had 10 drinks, my girlfriend had two. We were equally tipsy. She is more sensitive than me. Contrast that to the band geeks who drink a fifth in half an hour, and I am sensitive in relation to them.

lack the enzyme known as alcohol dehydrogenase.  typically certain native american stock since availability of alcohol in europe rid that gene base of the deficiency.  yes, they get drunk easily and remain drunk for extended time.

but with interbreeding, this deficiency can be expressed in pure european genetic crossings.

Well stated, and totally true.

Now I'll break it down into less scientific language, if perhaps not politically correct.

I am one of the people Keith_J is describing; that is –– mixed European and Native ancestry, and lacking the enzyme to process alcohol in a typical, healthy way.

The alcohol processing gene is something most people of Euro heritage have just fine.  Europeans have consumed alcohol for thousands of years.  The Europeans who did not have the gene usually managed to get themselves prematurely dead pretty quick several thousand years ago, one way or another ("Here, hold my mead")

An average 100% "white" person of Euro heritage drinks, gets tipsy, gets tipsy-er, gets jolly, realises he has to go to work the next day, sobers up, feels mildly crummy for a while, then repeats the process the next day only mildy the worse for wear.  What is going on is that the enzyme is steadily breaking down the alcohol at a manageable rate.

Native Americans and a lot of the subarctic (think Siberia and Mongolia) peoples just do not have this enzyme.  Drink?  Boom!  Fall on your ass stupifying drunk with an insane fixation to drink more.  No other way to explain it.  Not pretty.

A few centuries ago, Europeans came to North America, and nature took its course.  Nowadays lots and lots of people here have a generous mixture or Native ancestry whether they know it or not.

Someone may not look Indian at all –– or even know he has Indian ancestry –– but still inherit the lack of the enzyme.

By the late 1800s here in the US, all of a sudden there were a lot more alcholics than back in Europe.

I'll guesstimate a figure.  For example if, by 1880, an average American had just one Indian great-grandparent, that person had a one in eight chance of not being able to drink safely.   Suddenly there were about 12% more alcoholics.

Thus was born the "Temperance Movement" in the US.

Sure it had a great element of hysteria, but it was based in a very real situation that had not occurred before.

Interesting, never knew why Native Americans couldn't handle alcohol as well.

I'm a second generation American of Austrian-Hungarian and German extraction and somehow, the proper genetics for handling alcohol got lost.I do not have any relatives who are able to handle alcohol responsibly.Of course, this begs to ask whether it's an issue of nature or nuture that booze + my family tree = angry, fightin' drunk.

I made the choice to never tempt fate so to speak and the most alcohol I have ever consumed has been communion and I gave that up,although for considerably different reasons,in my late teens.

Most people can use alcohol responsibly enough and my interpretation of that is getting as shitfaced as they want so long as no others are harmed by their inebriated actions.Unfortunately, there are many of those with a makeup similar to mine that aren't quite as considerate.

Just a wild guess here, but one well founded in history:

The Hungarian people are to a lesser or greater extent descended from the Hunnish people (think Attila the Hun) who were of mixed Turko-Mongolian ancestry.  The Mongolians of today have roughly the same problems with alcohol as do Natives here.

We're not talking moral judgement, we're talking genetics.

So what of the Irish, then?  Where did they come up short in the genetic lottery?

Clearly full European genetic pool, but equaly clearly inclined to shit-faced buffoonery.

Genetic isolation?  It does do funny things over relatively short evolutionary time spans.

Or is it simply a social phenomenon, wherein the Irish get shit-faced because that's what the Irish do?

Did the Lord really create whiskey to keep the Irish from ruling the world?

You know, I know a guy who absolutely cannot handle alcohol.

I can go drink for drink with him, and he will end up doing some of the dumbest and outlandish things you can imagine.
It's like it's a mind or mood altering drug for him way out of proportion to what I've seen it do to myself.

And he has a little bit (1/8) of Native blood in him.
