I live in NV, have a CCW and carry a Glock 26 everyday.  But, my family is in the San Francisco Bay Area so I travel down there often.  Obviously, the PRK frowns on guns and knives for carry so what are other realistic, legal options?  What are pros and cons of the following:  OC spray, kubotans, kerambits, expandable batons, blackjacks, stun guns...they might not be legal anyway.  Anyone have real-world experience with these other non-lethal type weapons?  My current low-profile idea is the AAA maglight with a small nylon cord attached to keys - makes a pseudo-kubotan impact key swinging device.  Thanks for your replies.

Fox Labs OC spray is the best stuff out there.

My wife is not a shooter and carries a can of Fox Labs OC spray and a neck knife with a 2 inch fixed blade when she goes out jogging.

I would check more into pointy things. Repeated strikes with even a two inch blade will cause lots of damage.

Check and see what the maximum length for a pocket knife blade is. Also check on the legalities of a small fixed blade.

Thanks.  I always carry a knife, usually my Kershaw folder, and I do have training and know how to use it.  And, frankly, I usually just carry that when I'm in Kali.  Guess I've been thinking about alternatives to knives, particularly impact weapons and pepper sprays.  A knife can be fatal - seems only natural to me to consider less-than options that are easy to carry.

I looked up Fox OC sprays and ended up seeing the 'ASP defender'.  It could be used as a kubotan but has the advantage of being an OC fogger spray.  I also have my eyes on the Surefire E2D.  I like multi-functional weapons.

Maybe I'll write Diane Feinstein and ask her what it takes to get a CA CCW license.

Honestly, in SF, any 'weapon' is going to be frowned upon.  I live in San Jose and often work  in San Fran.  I carry my Surefire C2 with lanyard. It WILL make an effective kubaton as well as blind an attacker at night. Of course I also carry a Benchmade Osborne nearly everywhere (and a Spyderco Terzuola everywhere else) without worry.  I've carried a clip knife in my pocket in the Bay Area religiously for the past 15 years or so and have NEVER been questioned on it. I've even seen police CONSPICUOUSLY eye the knife in my pocket without ever bringing it up.

A pocket folder will not arouse suspicion.  Ironically, OC or a blunt striking instument will get you questioned every time.

Be thankful you are in NV.  My work brings me to Reno fairly often.  It's a comforting feeling to slip the mag in to my Glock 21 when I cross the CA/NV border and rack a round.  I was thankful I had it one night when I got lost in the back streets west of Virginia and got approached by a rather seedy individual.

I prefer to consider knife as "last chance weapon". If local laws doesn't allow to carry a handgun, you have to carry knife, but police usually don't like people, who use knives for self-defense, even if your actions are absolutely justifiable.
Kubotan is quite versatile weapon and gives defender many possibilities in street combat - www.self-defender.net/modules/articles/article.php?storyid=8 , but it requires a lot amount of training and zeal for the proper use.
OC pepper spray and powerful stun gun (25-30 W) - IMHO the most preferable street defense weapons for ordinary self-defense situations. They are reliable and have enough power to neutralize average street attacker.

I'm not sure "effective" and "kubotan" belong in the same sentence.
