is there any decent knock off tablets out there? not wanting to spend $400 to $500 dollars. |

You can find cheaper ones running FroYo (2.2) from Archos and a few other no-name brands. Check ebay.
I'd REALLY recommend against it. If you REALLY want a tablet, and don't want to pull your hair out with crappy functionality, PONY UP. The Asus Transformer is only $399 for the 16GB model, and gets you a nice IPS display. I have one sitting next to me. Otherwise, wait a bit for more options and see if prices go down... or get a 1st gen (gasp!) iPad. Like the two above responses say, the Nook Color is great for a low-cost tablet, but you will be missing a few things - HDMI out, BlueTooth (some hacked ROMs get it working... somewhat) and GPS. I just sold mine, so I have experience with it. BEAUTIFUL display... but fucking GLOSSY. And hit holds fingerprints like NOBODY's business. |

I don't know about knockoffs but I hear the ASUS Transformer is supposed to be a good deal. I myself am waiting for them to get Netflix going on the android tablets before I buy one. You also have to wait for Asus to get a decent amount out there so vendors actually have stock! I lucked out when a fellow ARFCOMmer ordered a couple, and sold me one of them at cost. I really dig the tablet. The keyboard dock makes it a LOT more versatile. I ran it yesterday for probably more than 6 hours on the dock battery. Should have 3.1 early this week, too. Hopefully they'll get more stock out there in June. I really want to get an extra AC adapter, but nobody has 'em yet. |

Are the android tablets better the iPads, other than price? I'm in the market for one this Summer Right now, there are a lot more apps for the iPad, which gives it an edge as far as that sort of functionality goes. Android was behind on phones and really took about 2 years to catch up. I think Gingerbread tablets will bridge the gap quicker. Android has many advantages that iPads never will. Apps will come in time. |

Asus Transformer is good value for the money but suffers from poor build quality and the software isn't ready for prime time yet (it should get the Android 3.1 update today, hope that improves things a bit). While there have been issues, I don't think it's all that bad. Realize when you go to forums for those kinds of devices, you're going to hear a LOT about the problems, because most people over there will start new threads on a problem rather than find one of the 10 related threads.... and people without problems just don't start threads saying "I have no problems!" My TF is fine. The only issue I have is the eject mechanism for the MicroSD card slot doesn't work right. It springs, but doesn't pop the card out. No biggie, I usually leave it in there all the time anyway. The back plastic will creak a bit if you squeeze it, but why would you go around squeezing your device all the time? Asus just introduced a new tablet device - it's a 7" tablet and an Android phone. The tablet has a hatch in the back that you slap the phone in, which then runs the tablet. Kinda like what Moto did with the Atrix and laptop dock, but with a tablet. Asus has REALLY been leading innovation in the tablet area. Early next year when I can upgrade on VZW, I'm probably going to hold out for a device that will do something like this, or like the Atrix. |
