when my grandfather died last year my dad and i inherited a bunch of his old tools. he owned and operated lumber mills in the 30's-60's in rural parts of alabama. we eneded up with several cross cut 2 man saws and MANY very nice old planars. along with various other small hand tools. the saws and planars are dirty and slightly rusty with years of use but in other wise good shape. i'd like to restore them for display. and good advice? |

As with anything there are collectors for them, and some, depending on the maker can be worth some big bucks to the right people. Where there are collectors, there info... See if you can find any maker marks, and do some internet research, look for antique tool forums, etc.... Judicious cleaning is fine, but I wouldn't lose any of the patina, maybe some linseed oil on the wood parts...etc... |
+1 on that. Before you do anything to clean them up, research the value first. You may end up screwing up the value during cleanup. There are internet news groups like rec.woodworking that has (or had) knowledgeable people on these types of items. Also there are forums like woodzone.com that may have some info on them for you. |
