[ARCHIVED THREAD] - basic algebra... (x+y)^2 (Page 1 of 2)

| Ok, what's the answer here... Poll inbound! |

you cannot "distribute" the exponent across the sum and get x^2 + y^2. Recall that an exponent means the number of bases multiplied together. (x + y)^2 means (x + y)(x + y), which gives x^2 + 2xy + y^2 I have a buzzer in my classroom and every time a student does x^2 + y^2 they get it. |

I can correctly solve the problem but the problem is in my 15 years since High School I have never once needed to use FOIL or any of the other methods I learned in Algebra.
The real travesty is all this shit is pumped into students heads and not teaching them how to apply it later in life....... |

You may never need to apply it in YOUR life, but what math teaches is critical thinking skills. |

Ok since it's been literally close to 30 years since I graduated high school, I've never done "^" to anything in my entire life! I looked it up, solved the equation (I think), and posted the answer. Which BTW was the same answer as 90% answered. So either I got it right, or I've gone downhill with the rest of you guys.

Quoted: Is this hard for someone? ![]() I learned it in Junior High over forty years ago. I never used it as an adult. Not in twenty years as a electronic tech in the Air Force (ILS, TACAN, Weather Radar, minor meteorological gear), nor in the fifteen years as a land title guy. I didn't use it, so I would have to relearn it. |

I am not from NH. What does that say? |

If we wanted to make, say, 25% on something we'd multiply our cost by 1.25. One time a salesperson knew our cost and the quoted price and couldn't figure out our markup. Passed it around half of the office before it landed on my desk. Most of the employees had college degrees.
