My computer uses Vista, and I have Mcaffee complete or whatever, but I'm still concerned about spyware and the like. What is the best compatible spyware detection and removal software program I can run ?

Free = Spybot S&D, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, and SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition.  Download and install all 3, and run inspections with all 3.  Rinse & repeat every week or so.

I use NOD32 ($40) plus Spybot, Malwarebytes, Adware, and Mailwasher. It seems to take all of them to get everything, and still no guarrantee.

Good Luck!

The free version requires manual updates and scans.

The tech support at my wife's CPA firm uses CCleaner to remove viruses, spyware, etc. and (drum roll.....) it's free and available online.

I use Spybot.  I have heard good things about Malaware but with a big caveat, that you can really screw up your system if you tell it to delete something important.  I'm fairly knowledgeable about PCs but not totally up to speed so I have avoided it.  Knowing me, I'd cock it up somehow.

my standard blurb:

here is your prescription:

If you have Norton, uninstall it. Its garbage unless you are running the server edition, which you are not!

If you have any Spyware removal software at all, uninstall it now. Most of the Spyware removal programs are indeed spyware themselves!

Download, Install and update these free Programs.  Then Run Windows Update.

Firefox 3 (use this to surf the net, not Internet explorer)

No Script add on (follow usage instructions, this program is about PREVENTION so you dont get anymore spyware, not for beginers)

CCleaner (run once a week to clear your cache and other junk)

Avast! 4 free (a free and fast virus scanner)

And If you must use spyware detector programs, then use these approved versions:

the real MALWAREBYTES can be found here and is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

the real ADAWARE can be found here, use MALWAREBYTES instead of this

the real Spybot SD can be found here, use MALWAREBYTES instead of this

The previous poster pretty much nailed it, but as another 15+ year vet of IT....

DO NOT USE IE.......no whines, no excuses, no but's.   Use IE, and its only a matter of time before you get fucked.

I've seen cases where spyware has rendered FireFox 3 unusable and had to use IE7
