saw they have this for my nikon d40. is this worth a purchase? looks like a rubber sleeve that goes over the body and lens.

I've played with some on a Rebel. Got it for a relative as a gift because they were really paranoid about any marks on the body.

It is basically a heavy rubber sleeve with clear plastic over the screens and basically a contour for the controls.

Seems to be good protection but I don't use it for myself because it also seems to make it hard to access the controls and seems bulky.

Not sure if it's similar for all the different kinds of bodies. Just a matter of how much protection you want/need.

thats kinda what i figured. i was wondering how much protection they would offer from small drops or bumps. i'd hate to lose a 500.00 camrea when 40.00 worth of rubber would have saved it.

I think the armor does more to protect the cosmetics. On a bump/drop I think the greater concern is the shock. And while the rubber while provide some cushioning, I still would worry about dropping a camera with the armor on just as much without.

I think it really all depends on what you do with your camera and just what you feel you need with protection.

I'll see if I can get some first-hand feedback on how it's working.

I've been using one on a D70 for a while now.  On balance, I like it, gives the camera a better grip IMO and some degree of protection both cosmetic and mechanical.  It does make getting to the various camera controls a little more difficult, on the plus side there is no worry with inadvertent operation of those controls.I didn't care for the lens cover that they had, I think a regular rubber lens shade would be a better choice most of the time, especially since it was too small diameter for the lenses I have.

Thumbs up from me for any camera that gets used in the real world.

mine will be spending much time at the range and a few other hostile places such as motorcycle rides and pattriot guard missions.

I'd give it a try then, they aren't that expensive in any event.
