Assholeish, yet entertaining concept:

Seems like it's ripe for wingtip strikes, in my non-expert opinion.

When the aircraft flies off the top of the bank I wanna be there watching.

or huge gusts of wind hit the plane and scrape the shit out of the wings

The guy that thought this up did so after watching YouTube vids of "scary" x-wind landings. That's all I needed to see. Netherlands guy came up with a retarded solution to a nonexistent problem after watching YouTube videos on something he knows nothing about. He should stick to smoking pot and housing refugees.
3/18/2017 7:32:02 PM EDT
[#9]
And you thought traffic circles were scary...
3/18/2017 7:32:43 PM EDT
[#10]
So it would be like nascar but with large aircraft filled with people.

What could possibly go wrong.
3/18/2017 7:37:28 PM EDT
[#11]
So as you are going round and round speeding up or slowing down they wind is constantly changing direction?  Where do I sign up?

So he gives them a circular runway with a headwind... the a crosswind... then a tailwind... then a crosswind...

Then there's the matter of wing strikes, maneuvering during a critical phase of flight, taxi distance, emergency services, multiple aircraft on the same runway, and a host of other issues

I'm not seeing a single positive side here aside from having a circular racetrack when the tardation gets shut down, but circular racetracks suck too

What he said.

Although I do kinda like the idea of being able to approach and depart at a variety of angles. This seems... Impractical.

It is more fun banking one way and yawing the other way, maybe while you are a student pilot it's scary until you learn the concept

I'll take my millions in small, unmarked bills please.

This isn't new, it's right out of the 1930's.

What was talked about 80 years ago still holds true today.  As I recall that article, Written in the mid-1930's, what was talked about THEN is what that Gent talks about today.  Crosswind and the ability to take off in ANY direction.

Back then the Average airliner carried around 20 passengers. Today there are airliners that have nearly 20 crew.

The idea is utterly impractical.

Dutch Aerospace?
3/18/2017 8:21:10 PM EDT

How do you even begin to certify pilots for this?
3/18/2017 8:24:01 PM EDT

Would runways go backwards south of the equator?

My guess is he is spending a lot of government and grant monies researching this and is drawing a large pay as well.

Good for him and good for him not being in the US spending our tax $ "researching" this concept.

Because if he was. President Trump would have told him this week the public sponsorship is over.

Don't know how you'd set up an ILS.  For total GPS approaches, I guess that would be easy.  For older planes with older radio nav, it could be a little tough.

Check ride pilot says "OK, land over there" and then bails out.

If the pilot flying walks away from the scene of the crash he gets a stamp.

I'm not an expert, but I don't think planes are designed to travel at take-off speeds around corners or on a bank.

No no no!  The runway is a treadmill. Plane is always into the wind, the runway moves under it!!  Plane taxies onto it, runway starts moving, and when the right speed is reached it takes off...........
3/18/2017 9:20:49 PM EDT
[#42]
Lol

A tricycle that weighs a million pounds going around a banked runway would be producing so much stress on the tires that they would burst. Or the plane would flip over and everyone would die.

I'm a pilot.

That guy is an idiot.

There is such a thing as an all way field - no 'runway', just a huge flat (grass) area - land whichever way you want.
That doesn't work either, when there is more than one airplane around.
