Well I'm getting a nice return for overpaying the government. I carried a M1 garand for two months in boot camp so these rifles kinda have a place in my heart, personally. I have wanted to buy one of these for years but keep putting it off. Every time I have the funds I end up buying something else. I'm starting to hem and haw about it again. I don't get to shoot all that much anymore and it's another caliber to add to the pile I already have. Had a talk with the minister of sex and finance and she's saying go for it. I'm torn. Talk me out of it GD! |

Quoted: Get it recently? How's the new crop of the lowest grade they have? Quoted: Quoted: Why the hell would we talk you out of it? I love mine. No picture handy...got an HRA Service grade...2 years ago. There was nothing discernibly wrong with it, shoots great, nice dark wood. Pick up a few cans of ammo with it. |
| This brings me to another point. I reload so I'm not too worried about ammo. However, I had a stack of clips about 6 years ago anticipating buying one of these things. Someone started a thread looking for a solid SOS for the clips and I have him the 20 or so clips I had. So,/where does one find reliable clips? |

CMP has new manufacture clips you can order with the rifle. Rifle comes with one, and I ordered a pack of 20. Zero issues. |

I know there are some online retailers. Lucky Gunner has (or had) some 60's paki ammo that was clipped up. I bought some and the ammunition is in damned fine condition unlike some of what is received from the CMP. The Greek stuff smells like a Lesbosian hooker's asscrack, but it shoots fine. |

For the love of God... Order a Service Grade. Better yet hustle to Camp Perry and buy one of the HRA Correct Grades on the rack (that is if you can get near the door - IHC's this week in store). If you want a like brand new shooter order a Special. You can get them in '06 or 308. 308 makes them ineligible for CMP as-issued competition though. Get a few web slings with your order ($9 ea) and a couple of boxes of clips ($20 / box of 25 - they run flawlessly). Get a gas plug wrench too. These aren't getting any less expensive and the CMP's stock of rifles on hand doesn't appear to be growing. The gravy train is going to come to an end eventually. IF this doesn't make you drool then nothing will. I stopped by the CMP North Store last Saturday afternoon for some air rifle targets...... |

It's dirty as fuck too, but no issues shooting it. Lately however, the CMP hasn't been selling much clipped up that I've noticed. Maybe I'm not paying enough attention

I love my Springfield service grade. It's in great condition and shoots very well. Buy a pack of clips from the CMP when you order the rifle. You can buy 30-06 from them if you want, but their prices usually aren't any better than other online vendors if you wait for a sale. |

Quoted: the field grade are now pushing almost 3x the price i bought my service grade for about 10 years ago. they are only going up in price. i can help if you need a cmp membership. |
Nah, there's no reason for you to buy the rifle Patton called "the greatest battle implement ever created." Forget all that history, the superb accuracy they can achieve. Don't spend money on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Heck, you already carried one, why would you want to do it again?![]() |

Get it recently? How's the new crop of the lowest grade they have? Field grades are hit or miss and everyone is going to tell to you to throw a few extra bucks at the cause and get a service grade. That said I won a rifle in a state association raffle and was sent a CMP field grade just before Thanksgiving. The finish was well worn and the op rod showed signs of minor pitting. The elevation notches on the receiver were worn as well and the "tooth" on the elevation pinion that engages the notches was basically gone. The stock and handguards were birch and the rear handguard had a couple hairline cracks. MW/TE was 3/3+. Needless to say I wasn't initially impressed, but on the plus side the rifling looked decent, the op rod was live, and the stock was very tight. I replaced the rear sight with a NM sight and took it to the range. Shoots 2.5-3 MOA with LC 66 M2 ball and about the same with handloads -- which is about all I ask from an M1 that hasn't been accurized. I was kind of hoping it would shoot poorly so I would have an excuse to match condition it. But since it's an original receiver/barrel combo (nothing else matches) I'm going to leave it as is. Might repark it and refinish the wood but that's about it. |

talk you out of it
