Are they comfy? Are they just a European thing?

I had some USAF issued back in the late 70's and they were very comfortable.

Nice and warm. Comfy. I need a new one.

My olive drab woolly pully was great before my metabolism matured. It's definitely a garment for a slimmer physique.

Had a Brigade Woolly Pully in black when they came out with the V-neck. It was nice, all my girlfriends tried to steal it.

I looked damn good in mine when worn with Bravos.

When I was in the Army in the mid 80's, we were issued that type of sweater (Northern Europe).

Almost pure wool.  Which I find very itchy.

It had to be damn cold before I wore it.

YMMV

They are form fitting...

Wool is still one of the best materials for cold weather. I wore my black army one whenever I wore my b's in the winter.
I also wore my old five button sweater a lot in the field.

That being said. They don't use to softest of wool when making them.

I remember when the Army tolerated "optional" uniform items.   I wore a green British surplus commando sweater over my OG 107's in lieu of my field jacket.

I like them.  I had the woodland camouflage one from Brigade Quartermaster back in the '80s.  I still have an OD Wooly Pully and a gray one From LL Bean.  The ones LL Bean makes are nicer.  The fabric is denser and they are better made.  The elbow patches are practical.  I've worn out the elbows on other sweaters.  Shoulders have never been an issue for me--I'd sweat my ass off if I carried a pack wearing a sweater unless it was REALLY cold.

Very Comfy.

But now I have the Blauer one with felt wind stopper, no more itching for me.

aint that the truth.

Best one i ever had looked just like USMC issue, except the the British paratrooper wings on it.  Much better cut than ours. Glad I traded for it

My wholly pullys are damn comfy and the girls I've dated always wanted to wear them as well.

Another comfy one is the one that Duluth trading company offers and is the 1951 version and they have other colors and I'm getting a second one for Christmas.

They last a long time if washed correctly and I've worn both kinds when out in snowstorms and stayed warm even when wet.

Just don't put any patches or other stuff on them and you will be fine.

They work better if you are slimmer as they are tight and form fitting

Not really.

Just like UDT shorts, if you don't have the fitness to pull it off, it's not worth wearing.

I loved mine.   My first was boot camp issue.  Most had a NSN clothing label, my issue one had a commercial brigade quartermaster label and it seemed a touch heavier.   Since I no longer wear small sized anything I no longer have that one.  I did pick two cabelas knockoffs.  They're not as dense but decent.

Back on point they were great winter geAr under the field jacket.

The coolest are the Norwegian ones, I pulled mine out a couple years ago and the moths had really enjoyed it...

I hated the wooly pully!  I used to use a poncho liner under my utility top.

LOL I guess everyone did that out in the field.  We looked like hobos with poncho liners dangling down and wearing black watch caps.  I had a poncho liner sewn into a gumby jacket in Korea, that thing still keeps me warm and dry during the rainy season!

The Swiss surplus quarter-zip sweaters are great. I bought an unissued one a couple years ago from SwissLink. Very well made, not a slim-fit, and very warm. Much warmer than any fleece top I've ever worn.

I almost always have a wooly pully around somewhere. Good for days that aren't cold enough to warrant a jacket but not warm enough for just a t-shirt.

Oh yeah I did buy the German! it had a hole in it so I tossed it one day.   Not itchy wool.

I thought they sucked, never wore it after MCT and SOI, but it was better than nothing.  I much preferred a field jacket liner under my cammie top, I loved that combo for trousers too.  A hooded sweatshirt, field jacket liner and goretex was all I ever needed in the field.  I never liked the bear suit either, cut too much for narrow guys.

I had one before the gut. Damn comfy. It was commercial production and far better than the USGI made one. The wool wasn't corse and uncomfortable.

I knew the Top picture as a Brit Sweater Back In The Day when I was in Italy.  They didn't have pockets nor shoulder straps and were So Warm as to be a treasure nearly worth fighting over.  They were always in short supply.  Nobody ever had enough of them.

I had two: One shrunk so much it wouldn't fit on an average 1st Grader, the other is slowly falling apart.  After nearly 40 years it somewhat deserves to disintegrate.

Oh, to get another one at a decent price.

Wonder if an under armor shirt under one now would be less itchy?

It was way too warm for a Texas winter.
