1)  Boot into safe mode (tapping f8 on bootup)
2) Run malwarebytes

This style of malware has been hitting really hard as of late.  It is pretty easy to remove.

I got that one last week.

Format, reinstall.  I tried for 12 hours and it just got worse.

Everytime you try and google stuff about it, it redirects you to a site where more crap gets on you machine.

If you've got a tech savvy friend nearby they can burn you a bootable cd/virus scanner

get rkill and run that right before you install, update, and scan with malwarebytes.

Most of these fake AV programs like to hide in your XP profile info.  Check "[system drive]:/Documents and settings/[profile name]/local settings/application data" (in safe mode because it likely won't work obviously) to see if there is an EXE of any kind sitting in there.  If there is, thats your virus (note: you will need to change your folder setting to see hidden files).

You'll also want to clean out any and all temp files in the temp and internet temp folders in the local settings folder of your profile.  Likely you will also have to repeat these steps for other profiles on your system.  Be sure to clean out the temp files in [system drive]:/windows/temp.  I hope this helps.

Reset IE back to it's default settings (Tools -> Internet Options -> advanced tab), should be a button there to do it.
