I am having problems were my computer is locking up and freezing then giving the blue screen. What is the best way to fix this? Or steps I can take to try to get rid of it.

My computer I built was good for about a year then I got this nasty ass virus. So I reinstalled windows and started over, but it's never been the same. Any advice would be much appreciated. Time frame before freezes can be instant to over an hour.

Thank you.

Could be any number of things. Start by getting the latest drivers for your chipset and other devices from the motherboard manufacturer.

If it is still getting BSODs, check and see what module is causing them, is it the same one every time? If it is random, it is likely motherboard, processor, memory, or power supply.

Did you ever hear of bleepingcomputer.com?  They help solve computer problems for free. But you might still have the virus or have it back in your registery. I had to dump my harddrive then take my battery out and short out the pos and neg. posts that the battery touch to in order to clear out the bios before I could completely get rid of the virus. There are files you can download that will clear up the virus and then clean out your  registry.

Dumb Me, I guess you did say windows...what version?

This is what you do: take computer to nearest trash can, toss it, then buy a Mac. Problem solved

How old is your HD?. If it is old I suggest a new Hd reload OS and enjoy. I try to do a fresh install every year. Format and reload. It may be a PIA but it seem to be worth it. So much crap floating around, you are bound to get something.

this is what I do for a new install, if you skipped a step do it:

-unplug, then blow all dust out of all heatsinks
-check bios is setup properly, like time etc.
-insert XP CD
-boot
-format C drive with NTFS
-continue XP install to completion
-install all motherboard drivers like LAN, Chipset, Sound card, etc. Download them from your mobo manufacturer
-install Video card drivers from ATI or Nvidia
-install motherboard utilities (if available)
-check device manager for any "yellow question marks", if you have some then find out what they are and download drivers for them
-apply any tweaks, overclocks, reg hacks
-check PSU voltages are in range with Speedfan
-stress test with Prime95, one instance for each cpu core. Do for several hours to check stability under load.
-benchmark with the latest 3dmark and SuperPi 1.5

You're instructing him all wrong.

You're supposed to tell him to send the "old defective" parts to me and buy a Mac. I'll put all those "bad" parts to good use. Problem solved (temporally)

Check out the video card, the fans, and the hard drive.  Go from there.
