anyone got some good recipies? been cooking for myself for about 2.5 weeks, and concluded that:

-hamburgers get old really fast
-buffalo burgers taste exactly like hamburgers
-hamburger helper isn't that good, and takes way too long to cook.

Any suggestions?

WAY too salty!

i've tried microwave dinners.  They generally have only about 250-350 calories (not nearly enough) and 1200+ mg of salt (disgusting).  The last thing I need is more salt.

I just transferred to a new school, and our orientation advisors warned us about eating ramen everyday.... they told us about a MIT economics student who did an experiment: try to get through school spending as little as possible.  He ate ramen every meal, every day, and ended up dying of malnutrition and hypertension .

I'm not sure I believe that, but ramen is so damn salty and nasty, I think that it's possible.

i'm not terribly short on cash, I just need something that's relatively simple and quick to prepare, and can be made in small enough serving sizes that i'm not eating leftovers for the next week.

1) Take a piece of bread.

2) Place topping(s) of choice on that piece of bread.

3) Then place another (preferably identical or similar) piece of bread on the top of the first piece of bread. (Which might be hidden under the topping(s) you placed on there earlier).

Enjoy!

BEst bet is to make a bunch of food, and then portion it out for the week.  It is nearly impossible to make just a meal at a time and not end up throwing a ton of food out.

At minimum make enough for dinner and lunch the next day.

Like tonight, we had burritos, what I would do for lunch if I were working tomorrow would be to line a quart sized container with a shell, smear the meat and bean on the shell and pack the greens in the middle.  I can nuke it at lunch and the greens will not get slimy but the meat will be warm.

The taco meat is somewhat versatile, you can toss it in some spaghetti sauce or whatever.  AIm for more versatile foods, like steak that you can whack later for sandwiches or whatever, same with chicken.

I've been cooking for myself for years . At first I tried to
scale down recipes to single servings , but most times it
doesn't work that well . So now I just cook however it comes out
best and eat leftovers a couple of times a week . Or I make up
a plate and Vac seal it then freeze it .

But then I like to cook , almost as much as I like to eat

Get a woman to cook for you. Let her worry about the leftovers.

I like toasting them when I get a chance.

But most of all, I like to dip them in soup...

Try turkey burger or ground chicken, they both have a distict flavor that is different than beef. I prefer the ground chicken myself and it makes a nice change.

2 words- slow cooker.

put something in in the morning and when you get home from work, dinner.  quick prep time and no waiting for the food.  plus you can take the left overs to work the next day for lunch.

sounds like a pretty good idea.  Until recently I have been eating Subway every day, which is not nearly as good for you as the advertisements would have you believe!! I gained 15 lbs!!!!

The crockpot is your friend. It makes the house smell good, it's easy and you freeze the extra. It's a nice change from salty greasy crap that is the American diet.

Bachelor Chow on the cheap.

Fry an egg into cooked ramen. (you can cut back on the seasoning in the pack used this way to save on the sodium but still have a good taste)
1 box Macarroni & Cheese + 1 can  hormel chili
Russian Rye Bread + your favorite cheese.  Butter outside of bread & fry it up.  Great grilled cheese.  (I like extra sharp cheddar, but it can take a long time to melt)

edit: Get a job at starbucks and take home all the deli sandwiches at the end of the night.

WTF if hamburger helper takes too long to cook, you must have kitchen ADD or something

Another option, and I'm sure you could make this in single servings.
Brown ground beef, add some pasta sauce from a jar. Pour over noodles.
You can also buy some of those stuffed pasta like ravioli or tortellini, they are usually fresh-ish near the deli, not frozen.  They take about 5-6 minutes to cook once water is boiling and then all you do is add sauce and eat.

Watch cooking shows to learn the basic techniques, get recipes off the interweb.

Despite all the misinformation from your mother, cooking is not that hard or much of a chore. It's actually kind of fun.

freeze left overs
that way you're not wasting food, but don't have to eat the exact same thing 3 nights in a row

If you have a bakery near you pick up some exotic breads / buns / hoagies and hit the best deli around you for some top of the line roast beef / Black Forest ham / premium turkey and anything else you like. Some really wild cheeses are a must have as well ( melted open face on your hot - toasted sammiches )

Hit the produce aisle as well and load up on all the  freshest lettuce tomatoes onions etc.

Even a novice cook can prepare some top notch subs / killer sammiches etc with the right ingredients.

A can of Campbells soup and WALLA  instant success !!

takes about 45 minutes in the microwave.
