just got a phone call from a curry sounding accent'd man,,,,this # has actually been calling for a few days,
but like most i don't answer calls from Un-ID'd #'s;

anyway, my puter' was off line, but he talked me thru  bringing up the black screen that showed my IP
address, which he correctly ID'd; I thought all along it was a scam, but kept him on to get some info
(knew it was  proaly bogus)--asked several times what he wanted;

he said he was from windows tech support-Microsoft Dept; what really got me thinking was
when the call picked up it seemed to switch to another line;

anyway, I told him i couldn't get online & let him "fix it" for me right now, give me a good callback # &
i'll call back when i can get online.

how did he get the IP addy? I know it's probably not that hard, but is my system actually at risk?

thanks from a cyber noob that is only looking forward to deer season startin'

He identified your LAN IP?  Because there's like a 96% that your LAN IP is 192.168.1.100

I'm admitting i'm behind the power curve on IT security, but no I'm not 80;
can you diagnose a 1/1 vibration in a rotary wing aircraft?

to each his own; so how did he get my phone #? hacking i can see, but
what's the longer range downside to having all that out?

It's possible your IP address, email and home data were stored a) in a database that was hacked and sold, or b) several databases that were hacked, matched and then sold.

The guy was not from Microsoft. He's a thief, social engineering his way into accessing your hard drive and getting your online banking details.
Don't do it.
Microsoft NEVER calls you first.

Neither does the IRS. They send letters to the address on the tax return.

Neither does the lawyer's office in Toronto, where your niece got arrested and is being held, unless you send bail money.

Hang up on them. Don't engage. Make sure the rest of the family doesn't either. "We sold the Windows machine and bought an Apple."

I told my Microsoft help guy that I did not own a computer.

He sounded pissed when he said I should buy one and hung up on me.

Ummmm you did an ipconfig and told him the address. Am I reading that right?

My father likes having fun with these guys.  First of all , he doesn't have a computer.  Second, when they tell him there's a problem with his computer, he asks which one?  The Pet or the C-64?  He tells the guy he must hang up to use the modem.

I also heard if you say you have a Mac, that won't shut them up.  A friend tried that excuse, and they said they support Macs as well.

The OP did well if he didn't give them any of his financial information.

I've worked on several people's systems who have actually given the friendly Microsoft guy their debit card information.

Same here. They almost got $650 after putting a sys password on the computer. Assholes.
