I remember the days when you had a DB9 cable and it could be a serial, null modem or straight through.

I have a few pieces of gear that use a DB9 RS232 connector for comms.

you would think it would be easy to find a serial cable these days, particularly in the thrift and used computer stores
but nope.

Found a APC UPS controller cable and some other cable I can't figure out what it is..I've hit teh googles with no luck.

DB9(F) > DB9(M)

1 - 2
2 - 3
3 - 4
4 - 5
5 - 1
6 - 2
7 - 7
8 - 8
9 - n/c

Shield - Shield

I guess we're blessed these days when our biggest concern is which connector is on our USB cable...

Odd wiring scheme indeed.

and it's a commercially made cable (molded ends), with  ferrite beads built in at both ends.
I figured I had a good shot at a real, standard cable... nope

why in hell do these hardware mfg not use standard cables??? FML

And if you use a non APC cable with an APC ups it cuts power to the load immediately.

I remember those days.

When I worked in healthcare I had to make a few of my own serial cables based on the lab equipments pin out diagram.  Pain in the ass.

I think that's some sort of really old craft cable, like a Cisco or Adtran.

I think I tossed a box full of old DB9 cables last year when cleaning out, or I would have just mailed you one.

Reminds me of the guy at work that was buying IDE cables at $40 each

Could've been worse.  Could've spent $500 on an ethernet cable  LINK

I read the source story several years ago.  A reviewer received some high end AV equipment from Denon to review, but their proprietary HDMI cable (based off an RJ-045 plug) was too short.  He called Denon, and they told him the longer cable cost $500.  He had a buddy check which pins it used, and it turned out to be a standard 568a or b wiring scheme.  He used a longer $1 patch cable and it worked fine.

Check an electronics supply shop (not Radio Shack/Best Buy/etc) if you're looking for a serial cable…most usually stock a ton of them.

Local store to me has bins of them new…lots of people buy them.

nearest one is in Boulder, which is about an hour away.  I like the store, JB Saunders, but its 2 hours drive (round trip)... the store does have a great assortment of everything

I used one cable, cut off one end and soldered a new connector on in the proper configuration.

If the device in question didn't have a special rs232 interface (you can daisy change multiple devices together), a regular cable and/ or a usb adapter would work.

That is a special APC console cable for accessing the terminal in the UPS.

figures.

I looked at a lot of different cable configurations, some even listed as APC (and I have a couple as well), but that wasn't one of 'em.

oh well.

thanks for letting me know!
