so i am a soviet style guns collector by nature as i enjoy simple tools and machines. i have plenty of AK variant rifles to last me 5 lifetimes.
i have never owned my very own AR. with prices seeming to come back into a realistic range what would be a good AR variant to pick up? I'm interested in off the shelf, flat top so i can vary my sights and optics, and am not interested in adding a bunch of crap to my rifle. I am a keep it simple stupid type of person. no lights, lasers, octagon rails for 17 accessories. just a good rifle. suggestions and ideas are welcome and lets assume price is $1300+- thanks |

A 16" barrel, with midlength gas system, flat-top receiver and collapsible stock is a good all around gun.
Lightweight barrel, chrome lining, and 1x9" twist for shooting standard 55 gr to 62 gr bullets. If you want to primarily shoot heavier bullets, like 75 grain bullets, then choose a 1x7" twist barrel. Heavy barrel and free float handguard with magnified optic, if you want to shoot like a precision gun. |

Not sure how you could do much better than that. |

colt 6920 the budget is really no budget, but i want off the shelf and not a custom, super accurized version of an AR. like my AK's i just want it to be reliable, fun and decent. like a 1911 i will spend $1000 on a SA that works perfect. but to spend $3k on a WC is just silly to me. |

If I had to recommend the best non-custom off the shelf ar, I'd go Colt, and I'm no Colt fanboy. |

Get the PSA M4 Duty ready rifle next time it goes on sale. Mil-spec everything and an aimpoint for 1K. Much better deal than the Colt. A Colt is not the end all be all of basic ARs. A Colt will do absolutely nothing different than the PSA. The duty rifles comes with MPI/HPT bolt carrier groups, staked castle nuts, etc. FN makes a great barrel. Flame suit on. |

I've been an AK person my whole life. I have way more rounds of 7.62x39 down range than I probably will ever have of .223/5.56. That being said my safe currently has as many ARs as I have AKs (4 AKs, 3 ARs+stripped lower).
I feel dirty just thinking about it. I like ARs though. Personally, I'd recommend building one exactly how you want it. But be warned... you can't just build one. |

I've been into AKs for quite awhile but built a franken-AR during the "Sandy Hook Scare" at the urging of (and help from) a friend. I still love my trash-can guns but I have to admit that I really enjoy the hell out of the AR and have since added more to the collection. |
