Can you even find out why?
I get delayed about half the time, a couple times I've gotten calls saying I was approved and a couple times I've just waited the three days and gone to pick it up, never found out what the problem was. What do you mean about 18 days? I thought they could only delay 72 hours before they had to either deny or release the gun? |
|
DO you use you SSN or leave that blank? I know of a few people that, as long as they use their SSN they are fine but if they leave it blank they get delayed. I's quite obvious that someone out there has a "record" and enough other info is close or matches so as to delay you.
Of course someone could have stolen your identity elsewhere and they have a bit of history under your name. |
Put your SS down and make your FFL tell the NICS people the number.
Also, get yourself a nationwide background check to make sure some scumbag didn't steal your I.D. and tried to assume your identity and got caught but kept up the scheme. Happened to a friend of mine and he's still having problems 8 years after the fact. EDIT: Oh for fuck's sale, beaten by a minute and a half. |

Sometimes my approvals take 10-15 minutes, sometimes they're practically instant. I've been delayed once, but only for an hour or two. It's the government, man. There is no explaining how they do things. This. You can apply to the FBI for a UIN (unique identification number) this is suppose to help people who are always getting delayed. We have only had one UIN in our shop, the guy was still delayed so I am not sure what the UIN really does. |

Me too. Yesterday as well. First time ever "conditional approval" - was told everyone had been delayed that day, including a LEO. Whatever, it's the new "three day wait" as far as I'm concerned. I've got a valid CCW, and no negative history. In fact, it's the 4th 4473 I've done in about a month. I figure I'm being looked at as a high volume purchaser. Yes, I provided ssn as there is someone else in the USA with my name - no I do not have a UPIN (YET, but will if this stuff continues). So I sit here - waiting to either get a phone call of approval, or a raid for all the merchandise I already own. ![]() I think this is happening far more than folks want to admit, as it looks like some black mark in your past has appeared. |
|
The FBI will not say what exactly they look at during a NICS check, so I cannot confirm this for fact...
We have seen alot of customers being delayed if they have a security clearance from a gov't agency. Mainly soldiers, but we also had a person with security clearance for working at nuclear reactors who was delayed. They all eventually got approved, some tooks hour(s) others took days. |
|
The other guy with my name is a high level person at the Dept of Transportation for a large State. That's why I provide my SSN. My assumption is, that after the phones die down on Monday they will start to actually research the delays. Until then, nothing is going to happen. I also assume it is counter-productive for the FFL to call before 72 hours. You certainly don't want to be pushy with the .gov. |
|
If you keep getting delayed, then approved, definitely don't buy on the weekend.
The critters that work during the week have higher permission levels to research discrepancies. Weekend keyboard monkeys either cannot or will not bother. ETA: if you buy quite a bit and frequently get delayed, you can apply for a Unique identification Number that will keep you from being delayed. I don't like the sound of that much, however....

The shop I bought at is almost 30 miles away. Tomorrow I pass by there on business, so I called for info. Basically it's 72 hours, not including weekends - so I'm looking at Wednesday before the shop might even attempt to call them. They do no research on the weekends, so there is no chance of getting a call with approval until a weekday. Lastly, if the shop calls them prior to the 72 hour period, they will not be given an approval (won't even check) rather they will be instructed that they have until the 72 hours has expired or when they call the shop. Obviously a Gov organization rather than a customer service organization. Expect similar service levels when healthcare goes Gov. |

So far, no approval today. I stopped at another shop that I noticed while out on a business run. That shop is getting conditional approvals too. WTF? - They tend to agree that this is our Gov'ts new three day wait. They were surprised that I have a CCW and still got flagged. Although the initial call was made at 4:00pm on Saturday, I'm roughly on hour 13 of the 72 that they can hold out on - since weekends don't count. Worst case is Thursday, unless they found the hookers. ![]() |

I have been delayed my last 20+ purchases in a row. ![]() WOW - that totally sucks, your name must be something like Nefarious Washington. Why haven't you applied for a UPIN number, does that apply in VA? If this happens to me again, I'm going to get a UPIN. My name is Michael Johnson. 5 years ago a guy on the 10 most wanted list was Michael Johnson. A 130 pound black guy. Being a 250+ pound white guy I can totally see the resemblance. They caught him 3 years ago and I figured the delays might stop. Nope. Every. Fucking. Time. |

Get a UPIN. What's most likely happening is the OP shares a name and close birthday info with some dirtbag. anyone care to sume up a UPIN? I have never heard of it. ETA...oooo wow. a Unique Physician Identification Number . I wonder why nobody though of that before. If only there were some kind of special number assigned to everyone. Like some sort of Social Security number. Hey. Wait a minute. I HAVE a Social Security number! Holy shit! -sarcastic.
So why would a UPIN work when SSN does not? |
|
Go to the US Treasury OFAC list and search for your name on the PDF. (If its there that is probably it. You wouldn't believe the names they sanction.
Jose Martinez? and they provide no other info so Jose gets fucked with whenever he tries to do something. Do you have a fairly common name? |

The UPIN is a permanent background check. It causes the .gov to expend resources to check you out once - then you get a secret UPIN which when entered on a 4473 is matched up to a database of folks who were mad as hell, and weren't going to take it anymore. |

Quoted: the last time i got delayed i asked about getting a UPIN, they said that the va state police look at the check fisrt in va. so i took that it wouldnt help as im likely getting delayed there... UPINs are the result of an FBI check (from what I understand) - I would expect that between a SSN and UPIN, there should be some efficiency gained. Also add a CCW to that list. The thing that is really freaky is that 1 of the 3 "conditional approvals" given to Bass Pro on Saturday was a LEO. That just tells me that the whole system was down - or that "new/improved" checks have been added to catch unworthy folks. In any case, I now hesitate to buy on a weekend due to this. I may be spoiled, but one thing in life I hate to hear is the word "no". Other than a fubared computer system, the ONLY other thing I can think of that would flag me is the fact that this is the 4th 4473 I've done in about a month. I suspect that my high volume links me to potential Mexican arms sales. If that's true, I want to see the Mexican Drug Dealer who got the Henry Youth .22 Lever gun. |
