An Ultimate Fighter from White Bear Lake got a visit from the Secret Service after a comment he made about President Obama.

When asked by a Fanhouse reporter Saturday whom he'd like to fight next, Jacob Volkmann replied "Obama," and went on to say, "someone's got to knock some sense into that idiot."

In an interview Friday evening, Volkmann, who works as a chiropractor, told 5 EYEWITNESS News he disagrees with the president's health care plan and his Making Home Affordable program. He says he stands by his comments, but added: "wanting to fight the president is different than intending to fight him. "

A Secret Service agent came to the school where Volkmann was coaching wrestling on Tuesday and asked if he intended to go to Washington to harm the president. Volkmann said he wasn't.

He says the matter ended there, but the publicity didn't. The video of Volkmann's comments ended up on late night television, but Volkmann says he doesn't mind. He says publicity is good for business and for his fighting career

Look, they have to chase down BS things like that.  Everyone knows that you don't hint at harming the President even in jest unless you want a visit from some friendly Feds.  Wake me if they file some BS charges on the guy.

Which is exactly why the guy just got a cursory and polite visit from the Secret Service, and just had to tell them "no, I don't ACTUALLY want to beat up the president" and nothing more.  The Secret Service spends a lot of time following up on idle threats, possible jokes, or things just said in the heat of the moment - JUST IN CASE - because they take the charge of protecting the president super-seriously.

So to imply that it is somehow a horribly opressive restriction on the 1st amendment is a bit of a stretch.  After all, if the guy had said:

"I think Obama is a giant piece of stinky shit"
or
"Obama is a communist dictator and is worse that Mao, Hitler and Stalin combined"
or
"I have proof that Obama eats babies for breakfast"
or
"I think everyone in the U.S. government is a giant communist asshole"
...
then he would NOT have gotten a visit from the Secret Service, and NOBODY in government would have cared one bit about his statement.

That's the key right there. The main thrust of the First Amendment is that the government cannot impose prior restraints on what you say. You are still accountable for what you say after the fact.

That said, this one is borderline in my opinion. I think it's clear from the context that he was talking about fighting Obama in the ring, in a UFC/MMA type fight - not going to DC and beating him up on the street. Also clear that it was a political statement, not one to be taken literally. I think the USSS overreacted a little.

If they pursue every threat that they hear about and nothing happens then they get accused of being too harsh.
If they don't and one of those threats turns out to be real, they get accused of not doing their jobs.

The TSA and the SS operate in completely different ways.  The TSA searches everyone, the SS only goes after people who have made threats against the President.  I'm not sure what the exact legal limit of the SS's authority is.

And I explained why it was a poor analogy.  The two examples in an analogy need to share common ground and the TSA and SS clearly do not.

The SS is responsible for stopping criminals from killing the President.  If a criminal succeeds, then yes, you do need to blame the SS for not preventing it.

Dunking on someone is not a violent act, nor is it in any way a threat.  Fighting someone is a violent act, even if it's in the ring.  The SS stopped by to make sure he wasn't willing to take that fight outside of the ring.
