Haven't we had enough union threads lately, jeez...

To your second part, just stop coming to work if you aren't getting paid enough.  How is this so damn hard to understand?

1.  This topic has been thoroughly discussed.

2.  Unions suck.

How do you feel about them in 100 words or less.

I don't know how I feel about them myself.

On one hand, they are organized extortionists.  They are there to manipulate the free market. If the workers' labor was worth 70.00 an hour, someone would pay that rate to them assuming a truly fair market system.  For instance: Joe gets paid 50.00 an hour at the Yugo factory- his labor is really worth 70.00 an hour.  Delorean will gladly pay him $51.00, to which Yugo offers $52, to which Delorean responds $53, Yugo $54, Delorean $55, and so on until he is offered $70.00 or what his labor is truly worth.
Unions don't like the $70 that the workers' labor is worth...they feel $100 an hour is more suiting because the company is making lots of money and they (the lowly worker) want their share of it.  To me that sounds like a redistribution of wealth- like a tax on the company.  It's seems socialist to me... but then again, aren't you entitled to the fruits of your labor?

On the other hand, if the owner of Yugo is making $20 millions a year, why shouldn't the people who make it happen get a stake in the rewards?  After all, if they don't glue the doors on the cars, the owner wouldn't be able to earn any money at all...

Are they a necessary evil, forcing company owners to spread their fair share of the wealth, or are they extortionist trying to get more than their true worth?

I love when people post all these theoretical realities, and have no idea how the real world works.

Joe gets paid the absolute lowest amount that the employer can get away with. Do you really think that the Yugo HR manager, and the Delorian HR manager never communicate with each other? While were at it, how about the fact that without a union contract, they say piss on joe, and go hire an illegal immigrant to do that 25 dollar an hour job for 7.50 an hour, all the while claiming that pedro is just doing a job that others aren't willing to do?

Is it socialistic for the employees to be able to make a decent earning wage?

Is it socialistic for employees to unionize when, after taxes, and unpaid medical benefits, theya re unable to support themselves, a wife, and 2 kids in a modest home?

Is it socialistic to honestly believe that the answer is "well, they just need to get a college education before they are worth anyhting?"

Yes, the auto industry is awash in currupt union officials, and crazy amounts of leverage in the past when it came to some of the more outrageous benefits that they have been able to negotiate from their employers.

Yes, there are many many examples of union corruption in big buisness.

However, there are many many many more industries, and jobs that are still able to provide a working man with an honest living as well. The generalised bashing of unions is a complete load of bullshit.

I know that there is no such thing as a true fair market- the HR managers are guilty of collusion for sure. I wasn't intending to bash just unions- industries are to blame just as much if not more so.
