Sorry for the dupe thread. Yeah I suck at teh intornet and need to break out a history book concerning the creation of veteran's day. I did not know that Veteran's day came after WWI, I hope that was Google's reasoning. I seemed to hit a nerve when I said "WWI was fought for nothing" I am a soldier and Vet myself and did not mean any disrepect to any of our troops that died in the confict. Here is what I meant. WWII was fought because the Nazis (and all the axis powers) were trying to take over the world, add to that the fact that they were obviously evil (genoside, rape of nanking etc...) Korea/Vietnam were fought to stop the spread of Communism, a noble effort. The current war on terror is being fought to both destroy those who attacked us on 9/11 and to destroy those who are like minded with them, as well as to install democracy in the Middle East. We can all see that these wars show that America, while not perfect, was/is a force for GOOD. On the other hand, WWI was fought because of an assasination and intangling alliences. One can hardly say that one side or the other was GOOD or EVIL, or that the outcome was even good being that it set the stage for WWII. That is why I thought that Google choose to display the WWI helmets instead of WWII Vietnam or OEF/OIF helmets, because WWI does not show America for the force for good that we have shown ourselves to be, for the most part, throughout our history. |
Veterans day, as we now know it was originally called Armistice day in honor of the ending of WW1. Thus the reference and doughboy helmet are quite appropriate. |
Please take the time to read about WWI before you claim the war was for NOTHING. Thank you |
WWI was all because some Archduke got shot and intangling alliences. However, it did allow us to become a world power and kick started our economy, so I guess all those millions didn't die for nothing ![]() Oh and it also led to WWII, which made it double fucking worthless! |
Hmm. I smell a moron. |
I think some people just love looking for things to wet their pants over. |
Tag for the self humiliating factor alone. If you can't even name the Arch Duke, why do you think you have the slightest idea why the war was fought?
|
Wow I thought smoking crack was illegal,,,,, vetern's day was for armistace at the end of WWI. Even if they didn't do anything last year at least they are this year. |
| If it makes you feel any better a few years back they didn't do anything for veterans day (or was it memorial day?). Those liberal rat bastards have a special sign for bullshit non-events like Alfred Hitchcock's birthday but wouldn't put up something for our veterans. To add insult to injury the google UK page did have poppy wreaths for the O's in google. |
I actually felt brain cells die as I read this. |
|
Here's a little history lesson on why WWI helmets are quite appropriate on Veterans Day for those that are public school educated. Clicky thingy that takes you elsewhere |
I was just about to post this. By the way, tomorrow may be the federal holiday, but today is Veterans' Day. Seems the o_p didn't notice this. I call for the original poster's banning due to his weak rant and obvious ignorance of the history surrounding Veterans' Day! |
I'll try harder next time, but it was a dupe too which gives me extra points. Sorry guys, Google still sucks, but maybe they are trying to do better (probably due to outside pressure though) |
Speaking of agenda. What are you just pissed you learned German in HS and now you dont get to use it?
|
Probably ought to google up some photos of GI's in early WWII. You'll notice they are carrying 1903's and 03A3's, too. |
+1 and a |
Let's see if we can un-dumb this thread some. About the only good thing to come of The Great War was some soldiers' poetry. Thus:
