looks rather inexpensive.. solar powered? any good. cost for 5ac.? saw a kit somewhere for under 100 for 5ac? single wire or double wire? want to keep in a few goats and a cow. will a dog respect the fence wire? |
My own experience is rather limited, but here goes:
Sounds like you are new to electric fencing... one thing to be aware of is that weeds will defeat the fence. If you have weeds or any other kind of live plantlife touching the fence, they will short the current to ground, and animals either won't feel it or will get a very reduced shock. Also, AM reception will be degraded by spurts of static that are timed with the electric fence charger. |
You need a more powerful fence charger then. Good ones have enough juice to burn the weeds that touch them off (really more wilt them). The wire can end up in a 'tunnel' through badly overgrown weeds though and not make good contact when touched by livestock. |

If you do it properly a two strand should work, I am assumingthis is in addition toa regular fence, right? I like the plastic rope that is braided with a couple of wires inside. It is easy to work with, and holds up well. As for dogs, some obey it, some don't. I used an electric fence for some of my dogs, but have found that a radio collar works better. Much better. TRG |

yes new to electric fencing no, this will be to corral live stock. there is not additional fencing, guess this is a bad idea.? new property isnt fenced. less I can convince neighbor to pay for half, probably wont be. was hoping to corral a cow/steer and a few goats with in 4 or 5 ac of the 10 i am buying. if its gonna cost me 2-3k to build fencing..guess it aint gonna happen |
I have seen electric fencing used on some pretty large pastures to keep cattle penned. It can be done, but you will probably need 4 strands or more. It will normally keep cows and goats in, until you lose poer, a limb falls on the fence, or a scared cow bolts through it. It won't keep coyotes out though, and that will be tough on your goat population. TRG |
| spend the bucks on a low impedence gallager fence charger and you wont have a problem with anything. ask me how i know.. $500.00 for the charger and a few bucks for the post and insulators and good to go. two strands of barb wire barb wire you wont have a problem. check local laws if you put up your half of the fence your neighbor can be made to fence his half with a legal fence. wich may be 4 barb wire strands. Depends on state fence laws. Check with your county extension office.. They should be able to answer questions and assist you. |
You can do it with two strands of wire if the area is fairly small, The white roll up stuff with the wires inside works fairly well. Just get one of those boxes you plug into a standard outlet, wire it up, run the wires, plug it in, then piss on it to see if its working!
