should I get a 511 0r 512 and does the 512 creally last 1100hrs, on 2 AA batteries?![]() |
I did a good bit of research before settling on an optic for a mid length A3 carbine. It seemed EOTech has gotten a bad rap lately, a lot of people were having issues with their holosights running out of batteries SUPER fast. As in they'd open the safe, pull out their weapon and fire up the sight, and it was dead. I still went with the 512 (people only speak out when they have a complaint, and not when they're satisfied, in many cases) because I got a smokin deal off the EE. Mine still fires up every time I try, 5+ months later (which is by no means a "long" time), so take that for what it's worth. I really prefer the "two eyed" target acquisition and the reticle of the EOTech to the other options out there (especially in the price range I could afford). I'm happy with MY purchase. |
This too. I'm using Duracell Ultra Digital AA's, they're supposed to offer longer life for things like digital cameras so I figure they'd be good in a holosight. Got a 16 pack from Costco for $9 or so. I keep 4 extras in my padded rifle bag. |
| I got my 512 right after they came out with revision F, in that time I have changed the batteries exactly twice. I play with it all the time and almost never shut it off myself instead letting it go the 4 hours. I also spent the money and got nice Energizer lithium batteries, $6 for two but they last longer than cheapies. |
Aimpoint has indeed done some impressive things with respect to battery life. The EOTech is a ways behind, but still has great battery life. |

The 512/552 runs on AA's, which allow you to chose AA Lithiums (aka "photo" batteries). Lithiums not only last longer (more mah) but also seldom leak. And even better, they don't exhibit strange voltage changes when they get very hot, thus shutting the 512 off. The N batteries as used in the 511/551 are only available in alkaline type. So that's why I use 512 and 552 Eotechs. |
512!!! The 5x1 series should be dropped for stupidity.
Yes IF you use Lithium batteris and IF you keep it on the default 'on' setting (7 IIRC). However the default setting doesn't work for most people outside in decent daylight. The setting works well indoors and under lower light coniditions. |
'N' batteries (the type the 511 uses) are not available in Lithium. The 553 series use CR123s ARE lithiums (and have a run time similar to the AA models). |
