My girlfriend and I are going to an outdoor range on Saturday. What are some common rules that we should know? Do we need to pick up are brass? When is it safe to go down range to check a target?

Don't smoke. You will piss people off.

The range probably has a class to tell you about the rules.  Go.

As a general rule, you only go downrange when it's a convenient time for everyone on the line.  You make eye contact with EVERYONE on the line, shout "downrange!" and make sure they acknowledge that you're heading down.

Also, make sure you don't touch a firearm while someone is downrange.

Most ranges allow you to collect your own brass. Even if you don't want your casings, it's usually your responsibility to clean them up (unless it's a private club and that's one of the services they offer). There's generally a broom and a dustbin for you to clean up with when you're done.

Only go downrange to check/change your target during an all clear. When there's a ceasefire (prior to the all clear for target checks), unload your weapon, remove the magazine, and open the action (various ranges have varying degrees of strictness here - some public ranges will have a range officer walk down the line and verify the actions; some will take your word for it). Stand behind the yellow line and DO NOT TOUCH ANY GUNS! No reloading magazines either. Some ranges have rules about reloading magazines only at the firing bench; others are more relaxed and will let you reload behind the bench. There will be rules posted and you'll probably have to sign a paper indicating you read and understand them.

Have fun, and most importantly use common sense!
