Depends how bad you want one. If you want an XBOX, then wait a few months. The XBOX 360 is slated to be released in November, and prices should fall on the original XBOX after the 360 debut. Playstation 3 is slated sometime in June 06 if IIRC. I like XBOX because of the good game library - mainly action / fighting types. Playstation 2 has many more imports available, and more RPGs than the other systems. Nintendo has some neat ideas, but seems to be holding on for dear life. |
Both XBox and PS2 are priced about the same the last I checked. Both have a great deal of first person shooting games (mostly what I play). Graphics is better on XBox, especially if you have a big LCD screen. Blockbuster supports both, but lately there seems to be more games of PS2, but I am not sure how many of those are 1Pers. Shooters. Hope that helps. |

Best advice is wait for the new ones to come out. They'll stop making games for the old ones, so you'll just be pissed when all the new games come out and you can't play 'em. I think PS3 is due out in Sept last I heard. Haven't heard about the new XBox, but I'll bet it's not far behind. |
That's Sony hype right now...their systems ALWAYS sound like the 2nd coming...IF you believe their specs, and IF you believe that can actually sell the PS3 in it's currently "reported" form for less than $600. Of course, it'll be close to Xmas '06 before the PS3 hits the US, so a lot can chance before that happens. I'm very suspticious of Sony's claims, especially since there was ZERO playable content at E3 last month. To get back to the matter at hand, which system to get now? Tough on...both the PS2 and Xbox have a pretty good selection of games, the Xbox graphics are much better than the PS2...but the PS2 has some franchise titles that you can't get on Xbox. There are bargain bin titles worth having for both systems. If you have an HDTV, and care about graphics, then the Xbox wins the race in a cakewalk. The PS2 graphics engine sucked when it came out, and it truly sucks now, when compared to the Xbox. If that's not such a big deal for you, then the PS2 has a really big library of games that are cheap and worth playing...the Ace Combat series, Onimusha series, Devil May Cry, etc. I really haven't messed with my Xbox much lately, but I've been abusing the PS2. The new slimline PS2 is really cool, and there are a couple of 7" flat screen monitors for it so you can make it a portable, self contained system...and dont' forget the PS2 plays DVDs as well. (so does the Xbox, but in no way could that thing ever be "portable" lol). I'm not sure if the slimline PS2 has the progressive scan DVD player, but the regular one does. The Xbox DVD player requires an extra remote, and is NOT progressive scan. It really boils down to games, though...you need to look at the titles you like/want, then decide. All things being equal, the Xbox version will always look better. |
Well bud having a young teen in the house, we have them all.![]() You can keep the Nintendo which has little appeal to anyone over 12 although the 12vdc and LCD portable screen is a pretty neat keep the kids busy in the car option. The PS2 has probably the best game selections and number of games however the graphics and cost per game is more than the Xbox. The game system that gets the most action around here is the Xbox by far. Besides good graphics, the games start out a tad lower than PS2 at first and then drop more rapidly. Halo is going for $20 now and Halo2 used for the same. By far, the cost of games outweighs the cost of the system so what games are available and at what price should be a major deciding factor. All I can say is I'm awfully glad I make my son buy his own systems and games. Tj |

whatever you get, become familiar with this place: www.ebgames.com/ebx/default.asp I buy "preplayed" games from them all the time. Their selection varies from week to week to some degree, but they always seem to have what I'm looking for. You can search by title, price, etc. |

Pluses XBOX=better computer than PS2, hard drive on console, no real need for memory "cards" except you can buy one. PS2=more games than XBOX. Minuses XBOX=less games than XBOX PS2=need for "memory cards", and XBOX has a gaming computer. I have an XBOX, and maybe next year or '07 I might trade up to XBOX 360. But go with the XBOX and don't look back. |
XBox DVD is Progressive Scan. Although you can control the DVD playback without the remote from Sony, it is a PITA. Remotes are cheep for both systems and you dont need memory cards for the XBox. If you are a Halo fan buy XBox, if you are a faggy RPG player, buy the PS2. |
Hmmmm...I'm pretty sure the Xbox DVD is not progressive scan. There was a lot of talk about it before the system launched, but they dropped it to cut down on the $$. Even as of May this year, people are still saying it's not: "Pros: The Xbox is the most versatile console and perfectly complements a home-theater system.Best under-the-hood specs; built-in broadband adapter; 8GB hard drive for music and saved-game storage; high-resolution display support. Xbox live. Cons: Big and bulky; separate kit required to unlock DVD-viewing capability; no progressive-scan DVD playback. It costs more than other consoles." I didn't book mark the site I got this from, since I'm lazy lol. I never bought the DVD kit since I was under the impression it isn't progressive...so I can't check it now. Still, I'll take the slimline PS2 w/ a add on screen as a "portable" solution to on the go gaming/movie watching. And my PSP |
I had both and sold the PS2. Xbox has better graphics and loads them quicker than ps2 and it also has a built in hard drive so you dont need memory cards to store games. Get X-box, and then get doom3, splinter cell 1,2 and 3 and halo 1 and 2 for starters |
Definately get the xbox. There is no better console, until xbox360 that is.
looks like someone forgot the waders required to not drown in the bullshit that comes from Sony's marketing department. |

Do you have broadband internet? If so get the ps2 and buy SOCOM II. The online part of SOCOM II is the most addictive game I have ever played. SOCOM 3 is due to be out in late October and its going to be the shit! PS2 games are free to play online. XBox games charge like $100 a year to play online. |
Yep, and the service you get for that $49 dollars is above and beyond anything Sony could hope to offer. Xbox live is most definately worth every penny if you play online. Also, look at how many games are live compatible as opposed to games compatible with Sonys online gaming service. Blows Sony out of the water. |

From what I have been reading, the next gen gaming consoles, despite all the hype, will still not be anywhere near as powerful as a modern PC gaming system. For me there are only 2 shooters that have the right feel... Couter Strike: Source (comes with half-life 2) and BattleField 2 They are almost as much fun as going to the range : ) They are currently available for the PC, but I'm not sure what the future plans are for the consoles. |
