Just stopped in at the local GM to check ammo prices. I saw that the gunsmith area was unoccupied. I asked the counter guy and he said corporate policy is no "gunsmiths" in any of the stores. That should save the lives of a few shootin' irons.

A lot of them.  They have regional gunsmith shops now. One shop per 5-6 stores.

The above is true.

My first and last dealing with Gander Mountain.

Lets look at that handgun
"Can I see your ID?"
OK.
"Hands pistol over"
The going price on most internet dealers is about $300 dollars lower than this. Is that the best price you can do on it?
"I'd have to go talk to the manager"
Ok
"Stands there like a fucking idiot"
Well....are you going to go talk to your manager?
"No"
Ok. Well, I'll never be back here again.
"Why?"
I'm leaving.

Thats odd. Down here in Texas I went to one a few months ago with my buddy to see about getting his 10\22 barrel cut down and the gun smith section was really busy with all sorts of people running and around.

Each Gander used to have a "gunsmith".  That is alot of Ganders hoping to all get someone competent.  Gander upper management realized that most were not as highly skilled and as expedient in their work as they would like.  They chose a small number of stores in each State to staff highly qualified and highly efficient Gunsmiths.  It now is quicker for your gun to be shipped out, fixed and shipped back from a central location than it was when you dropped it off at your local store and waited an eternity to get your firearm back.  Obviously there were some small number of stores which already had a quality 'smith but the majority did not and were costing the company money.
The stores around here still staff a minimally qualified person to do safety checks and cleanings.  Any serious work and it gets shipped out.

I often go into Gander as my daughters 1 hour girl scout meeting is across the street and it's to far to drive home. I fondle the toys, grope the guns, and get up close looks at things I'm interested in. I never buy more than a discounted T-shirt because their prices are retardedly high. I don't understand their business model. I would love to buy my reloading supplies there, but I can order online, pay shipping, and still see a substantial savings over buying from them. Same with anything else they sell, including guns. Powder is the only exeption, which I get at the occaisional funshow. I guess there must be a large population of uneducated idiots buying from them, I just don't know any.....

I mis-read the lower case title and thought this was about a place called Gender Mountain.

I feel cheated.
