My roommate as soon as we are past, says immediately, "what the hell is wrong with you?" I already knew as it was coming out of my mouth it was a bad idea. We continued walking. I saw the man gingerly follow us for a block, and at a good distance. More like the "yeah dude you talk shit but I'm tough too" type shit. The next block my roommate enters our loft building. I continued as I intended to go to the convenience store on the next block. So now three blocks from my original statement (WHICH I REALIZE WAS A BIG FUCKING MISTAKE) I again see this guy behind me, following me. He kept a pace of about one block behind. I, now one block past my residence, pull my light out of my back pocket, face my back towards the wall of the building and look him dead in the eye to my left. He passes me, looking back. At the end of the block (maybe 200 ft) he stops in the middle of the sidewalk, legs stood wide directly across the walk, and looks back at me. I still have my light in my off hand (still turned off). 150 lumens to the face is a very good deterrent when you don't really know where the situation is going in the first place. If someone just wants to act tough, a blinding light is better than anything else. I decide to talk to him, rather than attempt to enter my building. I would rather him not know exactly where I live (even though he could have seen my roommate enter) and second, it's a secured door, followed by a secured vestibule. If anything turned bad, I wouldn't make it through in time. Remember, he is now past me by about 200ft, standing in the middle of the sidewalk, looking at me. I have stopped. I ask him, "Why are you following me?" He says, "you were rude." I ask him, "Why are you accosting me?" He doesn't answer. I ask, "Why will you not let me continue my walk?" I watched him walk from where I was standing for at least five blocks. I then made a square walk around the block of my building and entered in the back. I realized I caused the situation by being a dick to a panhandler. But, obviously, no one has the right to follow or demand money of anyone. I feel like, other than my original statement, I handled the situation well, and never over reacted. He watched me grab my light. And when he had passed he said "woah man I'm not going to hurt you." He saw me take action. I had plenty more available action to take. But he saw it. He saw me grab something. Even though I never turned the light on, or never even faced it towards him. Like I said...I had several "other" defensive options. But I feel like in this case, simply stopping, standing my ground, and looking him directly in the eye solved anything more that could have happened. First time I've ever had someone follow me. Again, I KNOW THE ORIGINAL MISTAKE WAS MINE. Any thing else I should have done? Must have been a pretty upscale panhandler to engage in dialogue with you at that level. |

I will, and did talk exactly like that to a panhandler whom is following me. I chose the word panhandler for a reason. Not bum. He was well dressed. Whether or not he can understand basic English is not my concern. I will be direct and concise in my statements, and I was. Trying to be the bigger dick will only cause more legal trouble if it comes to it. I made my original mistake, I have no regrets past that. I made direct and succinct statements to avoid further confrontation, and was more than willing to involve LEO if necessary. If you read, this obviously wasn't your normal blow off beggar. Being followed, discretely, is what made this disturbing. |
