what's the best way to increase the number of pushups you can do? one website I read said however many you can do at one time, do that 10 times a day, every day, adding 1 each day. sounds like burnout to me. another website said do pushups every other day to give your muscles time to rebuild so it's more efficient, which makes sense, but didn't say how many or what kind of progression.

also, how do situps differ? would the same progression scheme for pushups work for situps too?

Back when I did exercise, I'd alternate running and pushups every other day, situps everyday.

My understanding was that you'd need a break to allow most muscle to repair itself, but abdominal muscles didn't really benefit from a break for some reason. (could be BS, I really don't know)

This is true. And the running breaks up the acid in your muscles.

I hit the weights every other day. I am no spring chicken and my muscles need to recoup. I bicycle everyday with a break every 4-5 days. I drink whey protien and soymilk to repair muscles.

Generally true,  However if you can already 20+ pushups there is no reason to not work them every other day since your looking to improve endurance.  If you do less than 20 you should work them no more than twice a week maximum so they have time to recuperate while you develop more strength.

Abdominals are a special case, they get massive amounts of blood and you can work them every day, even multiple times a day and they just keep getting stronger.  I have never seen anyone able to overtrain them,  maybe if you didn't sleep it would be possible.

how many times should I do a set of pushups on a workout day? just once, or a few sets?

Do 4-5 sets each set go till failure(till you can't push up any more.) keep log at first to track results. Give at least four days between chst workouts to let muscles recoup(just as important as the workout itself) abs, and calfs can be worked out daily. I suggest a good muti vit. and protein shake no later than half hour directly after workout. consume 1-2 grams of protein per pund of body weight per day. good luck. eat a good food too(eat clean).
good luck... you will be a push-up machine in no time.
