I went throught\ the same thing except, I did the USP thing as well, I fainally got around to purchasing a Sig 229 .40 cal and could not be happier about it.

I agree with the SIG idea... go fondle a P-220.
The revolver is also another option you may not have considered. There are 7- and 8-shot .357's out there. S&W is also reintroducing the Model 29, if I'm not mistaken.

Have you tried the Beretta Vertec? It has a much different grip than other Beretta's check it out, its worth a try.
