New TV comming Sunday. I have speakers (4) in the walls, 2 are in the front where the TV is, and the other 2 are in the rear. I think that i need a surround receiver to make my speakers work. Don't want to spend very much. What is a 5.1. Also, my TV stand has a place for a speaker centered under the TV. This would give me 5 speakers.

MachineGunMike,

5.1 refers to 5 full-frequency channels and one limited frequency channel.  The five full-frequency channels carry sound of the whole frequency spectrum (low, mid and high) to the five main speakers: left rear, right rear, left front, right front, and center front.  The one limited frequency channel carries only low frequency sound, bass, for a subwoofer (usually powered, meaning it has its own power cord and amp built-in).  The 6.1 and 7.1 systems add one or two full-frequency channels, and a _.2 system adds a second subwoofer.

What's your budget for a surround receiver - how much is not very much?  My preference in less expensive receivers is Yamaha, and I tend not to like Sony.  Yamaha's least expensive one should be around $200.  As you go up in price, you generally get more features and better quality, obviously.  However, don't go by price alone, figure out what your receiver budget is first.  Then determine if there are any features that you must have (HDMI, number of inputs, etc).  That'll help narrow your selection process down significantly...
