father in law has a hernia, says it makes the nuggets hurt, i said go to the chop shop and get it fixed, hernia's can get pinched/blocked and cause very serious damage

he goes to the quack, the quack says no big deal, 15 percent of the american males have them and do not even know about them, they really do not like to mess with hernia's

tells the inlaw to not worry about it, if it hurts too badly take it easy for a couple of days and he will be fine

sounds like bs to me, the doc is a quack right?

Time for a 2nd opinion.  Hernias that start off small can grow larger and allow a piece of intestine to bulge thru the tear, after which it becomes pinched and then inflammed and then your whole freekin' stomach can explode!

Just kiddin' about the exploding stomach, but hernias are not to be taken lightly (no pun intended) Some people live with them for years and some have had major problems.  When I went to the Dr with mine, he took one look and I was in surgery within 48 hours.

Yes some people live with them for a long time but I can't imagine a reputable doctor telling someone not to worry about it. Get a second opinion. Things can get real ugly if it should become strangulated. From my experience, rest does absolutely nothing for a hernia. It's a tear in the abdominal wall and I don't care if you lay in bed froever, it's not going to heal itself. My .02

I'm going to the Doctor tomorrow to hopefully get my staples removed for Inguinal (lower right gut) Hernia repair surgery I had on 12-31-03. (My second one damnit!) It fast surgery now days. I went to surgery around 7:15 am and was back at home by 10:00 am. Including stopping at the Pharmacy.

Several things, look it up on the internet. lots of reliable info. look up the type of hernia he has.(Nutsack hernias)

If it is a bad enough hernia, your guts can become twisted (strangulated) which causes that section to die. My uncle lost over a foot of his small intestines due to that. mine (my second one) was about the size of a golfball, I got it from shoveling the 28" of snow last winter off of my garage roof. It hurt like a bee sting most of the time. If I was on my feet very long it would really be uncomfortable. Plus I was afraid to lift anything heavy for fear of making it much bigger.

The type your F-in-L has is where your hernia is pushing out into your nutsack. That one is the scariest to me! I'd be worried about my intestines spewing into my nutsack if I lifted something heavy or sneezed or coughed hard. I could hold my hernia in and cough and it would amaze you how much pressure there is trying to push it back out. Maybe your F-in-L's isn't that big and the Doc isn't concerned? Mine stuck out mostly after I ate or stood long.

I would say if it bothers him that much get another opinion. Lots of people do live with them (small ones). But for me it sucked because it hurt all the time and worrying about lifting stuff.

Inguinal hernias are not a separation in the abdominal wall.

The inguinal ligament runs from the the pubic bone to the iliac bone and within it is the inguinal ring. This is basically a hole in the inguinal ligament thru which run the vas deferans, testicular artery and vein. Sometimes a loop of intestine can push thru ("hernia") and even go down into the scrotum. It is generally uncomfortable and rarely become strangulated but if they do the blood supply to the intestine can become pinched off resulting in necrosis, or a portion of dead gut. This then ruptures with ensuing peritonitis as the result.

Often men can push this back in.
Further, when the defect is relatively large it is rare that strangulation of the small intestine occurs, FWIW.

Unless there is a contraindication to surgery, I would probably get it fixed. Not much of a way to go thru life, IMO. Have Pops see a good surgeon and make sure you get a good anesthesiologist if surgery is planned. Ask around a little.

That doctor is full of sh*t, to put it mildly.  I've had 2 hernia repaired.  Sure lots of people have them and don't get them fixed.  As time passes, each hernia gets bigger and bigger.  It's a tear in abdominal wall that holds your guts in.  The surgery is not that big of a deal.

My last hernia was performed in day surgery on Friday.  Taking the pain medication, I wasn't in any pain on Saturday and went to work on Monday.  After 8 weeks of no heavy lifting, the recovery was complete.

That would be a ventral hernia and it is a defect in the peritoneum, or fascia that encases the abdominal contents.

Just a FWIW.

Oh print this out and give it to him.

Tell him to stop being a big baby. Simple procedure as COZ said. I had it done as well... spent a year and a half worrying about it and after i finally get it done, three weeks later I was 100% BACK AT WORK!

Couldnt believe I spent all that time worrying about NOTHING!

One warning though... DO NOT rent funny videos while recuperating... Laughing hurt like a MF'er.

Or funny TV shows.  the first time I saw Ted Baxter as Ted Knight on the MTM Show was the day after I got one fixed.  There are some times where laughing really really hurts and you can't stop.

I'ld wonder what the Doc really said.  I think what he said, what was heard and then what was told you had a few disconnects.

Ditto on the funny stuff, Hurts!

I watched the WV and Maryland Game (Gator Bowl)the day after. I was so friggin pissed, screaming at the TV. That didn't feel very good. Took a pain pill went to sleep after that sad sad game.

Thanks for the technicals DrJarhead, I didn't know the Inguinal wasn't a tear. My Uncles keeps coming out around his Stoma (Colitis) He needs to get it repaired again. He finally quit lifting weights. He was benching 300 lbs. Imagine the pressure!
