What kind of equipment does a guy need to buy to be able to record decent quality video direct to the hard drive on your computer?

I bought one of those panasonic usb "surveillance" cams and the quality on it sucks ... pretty much impossible to make out a face unless it's someone you know.

Any suggestions? It doesn't need to be covert either. Cheaper is better. Can I hook up a big 1990s camcorder on a tripod and have it stay on 24-7 somehow?

Get an IP camera you can hook onto your existing home network.

www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Description=IP+camera&x=0&y=0

ETA: Don't go with a regular webcam if you want it to be for surveillance purposes.

Get a big hard drive too.

You'll want a cam with a Sony 3CCD Ex-View chipset.  You'll have no problems making out faces.

The one I have is an IP cam. It's the panasonic BL-C10A. Definitly doesn't cut it for video.

Thanks I'll check it out. Looks like the cheapest one on new egg is $180 ...

I don't really need the night vision though, but if I can't find something that works and provides a clear video image I might have to spring for one. I'll have to google around and see if I can find a video sample from that camera.

Does anyone know if you can rig up a camcorder to serve this function (recording direct to hard drive)?

For God's sake please make sure you have at least 1gig of RAM.  I am tired of troubleshooting family PC's that have 128MB of RAM.  Spend the extra $50.  For fucks sake.  Thanks.
