Anyone know where I can go to get started?

Im about to build a home, and was thinking about a home security system, and thought, why not go all out?  I guess I need to make sure I run wires from all doors and windows to where the security panel will go, but do I also need to run wires to all the light switches and smoke detectors?  What else do I need to think about?  appliances?  HVAC?

There are several threads, including many by our very own TheGrayMan, HERE.  He has a whole bunch tacked to the first page.

hmmm that seems to be about safes and cameras.  im interested in automation stuff like insteon/x10 controllers, smoke detector interface, lighting control, temp control, etc.

I've done some browsing there. Much like jumping into ARs, there is a ton of reading and research to do.

I've tried to do some research just for my own interest, and to see how hard it would be to retrofit a few things into my house.  I didn't have much luck locating real distinct valuable information that was presented in an easy to understand format.  I eventually gave up, though I would admit I didn't try as hard as I could have.

So, all that being said...tag.

I've been in home and commercial automation for years, best place online I've found is avsforum.com. They are mostly home audio/video, but it is a good place to start. One thing for sure: run cat5e or cat6 everywhere. And when you think you'll need one, run two. Pre-wire is dirt cheap compared to retrofit. I'd post more but I'm on my phone.

Edit: Check out the automation section at AVSforum. It is THE forum online for DIY home theater, automation, etc. I used to go to trade shows and see "cutting edge" ideas that had already been done by an AVS guy. I was able to use info from that forum for solutions to solve issues at work many times.
