Does iTunes even work with Linux?

VZW iPhone 4 user here, and I love it!

Android works, but I just didn't like it as much and there are way too many flavors of it. If they can ever unify and standardize it, they may have a winner. Until then they have a mess.

I don't get the "fragmentation" argument. At least from a user's standpoint.

How many cellphones do you use in a day? Probably just the one. Any platform fragmentation would be unknown to the average user.

Specifically from a user perspective, certain apps only work on certain OS versions and certain platforms. The biggest issue is that each manufacturer has their own flavor of Android and different OS update schedules. This is a major fail in my opinion.

Please explain.  Some companies choose to customize their UI (e.g., HTC using Sense), but I'm lost as to the too many flavors comment.  There are numerous custom ROMs that you can apply to phones, but those are from independent people, google, who produces Android.

This debate can easily be simplified as follows:  do you want to be locked into apple's idea of what a phone/ui/etc. should be or do you want flexibility at the possible cost of a little stability.

I went android, my wife gets the iphone.  I like tinkering - phone/cars/guns/etc;  the wife simply wants it to work and work every time.

I'm pretty happy with my Droid X.

I don't really have any issues with iTunes, I don't really like though how Apple forces you to use it with their phone.  And there's a couple things that bother me about the phone itself (no removal storage, no user replaceable battery).  But Apple does something right, 'cause they sell the shit out of iPhones.

That said, in the coming months once I get some other debt paid off, I'm gonna buy an Android powered LTE Verizon phone.  Maybe by then the Droid Bionic will be out.

what worries people is:

a) they mix up ANDROID OS and droid (the actual phone)

b) the android OS works on more than one phone - which is what I like about it....

there are versions of the android OS, just like there are versions of windows, ubuntu, red hat, debian, iOS..... they all get updates

most of the phones out there are running on froyo - with some moving up to gingerbread.... it's the same OS and you can pick up a different phone (say, droid to eris) and be able to use it

I'll admit - I have an ipod touch (and an old video ipod).... and they work - they work very well.... but I can't stand being tied to itunes for everything.... no thanks, I'll take open source

by the way, if you guys haven't seen the new amazon cloud player it looks like it may be worth a look (I haven't used it yet)

Can you give an example of certain apps working on certain OS version?  There could be, but I've not run into it.

The manufacturers update on different schedules, not b/c they have their own flavor of Android, but b/c they have their own hardware and hardware varies drastically.  The manufacturer has to assure that their hardware will support the new OS.

Also, the carrier also has some control in updating OSs.  For example, Samsung provided the Froyo update last fall to the carriers.  Roger's updated their Samsung captivates soon after receiving the update. ATT, however, didn't update the same phones until earlier this year.

The dual-core Tegra2 based Android phones/tablets are great on paper but the reviews indicate they need more speed.

I manage a dozen HTC Incredibles and 2 Thunderbolts.

I haven't run into any apps that won't run. I have seen some apps that have an issue with the latest versions of the OS. But that problem is not limited to android.

I am a HUGE fan of HTC's SenseUI. I think they were able to make huge improvments to the stock android UI. However, if you don't like it you can pretty easily install any of the other UIs without being root. (I like Zeam better than the version of SenseUI on the Inc. But the newest version of SenseUI is far better than any of the others.)

I do wish that google would mandate the the user be able to manage their phone however they want, including uninstalling any apps.

So you're against having choices an options in phones that have the same  OS? Are you also against having the same engine in multiple different models of car, even though the different cars have different maintenance schedules?

Having options is what makes android superior. Fuck apple and everything they stand for.

Android needs stadardized hardware from a chassis perspective.

I'd like to see an all-in-one port on the bottom of EVERY Android phone.  Once we have something like this, we can start to see docks for these phones where each dock is not a custom dock that only fits one phone.  The footprints inside the dock can vary to some degree, but that's another topic of discussion.

This was my exact situation (my gf has the DINC) until I dropped my Droid in the pool.  Took a chance on the iPhone4 to see what the hype was all about.  That honeymoon lasted about 48hrs, now I have an HTC Thunderbolt 4gLTE.  So glad I switched back.

It's a phone.  Realistically, how fast does it need to be?  I think my X is pretty sporty, and what little hands on I've had with the HTC Thunderbolt (still a single core phone), that thing right there flies.

My previous job gave me an HTC Incredible for a phone. Had done a lot of configuration in it, added locations, bought apps, etc...then they fired me in Oct and took the phone back.

Last night I was playing with my new phone, and low and behold, all of my starred locations show up, including the office locations of my previous jobs, my apps that I bought showed up ready to download, etc...was glorious

Why?  If you want standardization, buy an iphone.  The beauty of android phones is that they are different.  You can get a 3.5" or a 4.5" screen.  A hardware or software keyboard.  Etc.

Personally, I've never felt the need for a dock.

I dislike Apple's walled garden practices.  Too bad Google, the phone manufacturers and the carriers seem to want to copy it.  Google does seem to want to scale it back to some degree, we'll see how much luck they have.

I'm still on a Blackberry, but on the 21st of this month I'll be upgrading.  Looking for the Droid Bionic, I may wait a little for it, but not much.  If the iPhone 5 was out I'd consider it, but it won't be out till later in the year.

Also considering picking up an original Moto Droid off ebay and using that till something that really trips my trigger is out.
