iPhone 3GS 16GB....
I downloaded the purplera1n exe to jailbreak my iphone tonight. It ran, but the .exe crapped out during the update and Windows (Vista x64) closed it and my phone was left in "recovery mode" or whatever. I had to restore from my backup and it's working fine again. I tried on my Windows 7 32 bit desktop, and it said some .DLL was missing and didn't work either. So now I'm wondering if there's another method besides the purplera1n method to jailbreak my phone. Thanks |

Might want to try redownloading it. Where did you get the installer from? I jailbroke my 3G with Blackrain, but that won't work for you. blackrain website... why won't it work for me? Blackrain, I believe only works on 3G and lower phones. Hmm....if so, I wonder if that's why it's crashing on my computer? Know what my options are then? My google-fu is weak tonight, apparently. |

Blackra1n works on all iPhones.
I have a 3 Gs and have done it twice on two different phones. I did my original phone from June when they first came out, and did the exchange one they gave me when the battery died on the first one. I have also done 3 other 3 G's and it works perfectly. Just be sure you do not have iTunes open when you run it. |

what does this do for your iphone? I have one, but never heard of this. It allows you to use carriers other than AT&T. Jailbreaking (Blackra1n) allows you to use programs not authorized by Apple. Such as Categories, Backgrounder, SBSettings, etc. These make your phone's features easier to customize. You can have Pandora Radio running while you are using a navigation program for instance, by running Pandora with Backgrounder. Unlocking (Also from Blackra1n) allows you to use your phone on T-Mobile's network, or in Europe Asia, etc, with the prepaid sim cards from those areas. |
| blackra1n will jailbreak a 3GS but if you allow the battery to completely die you will need to do a tethered reboot or something like that... at least that was what I read while looking into jailbreaking my 3G. I have to be honest, unless you are unlocking which requires you to jailbreak first, I don't see the point. All kinds of problems can arise from jailbreaking. But others love it, so so be it. |

I have been debating it. I was going to backup my phone then jailbreak it. I am curious. My buddy has jailbroken his 3G and 3GS without issues. |

If you have a good back up there should be no problem... worst case you lose an hour or two recovering the phone and resynching. I had a corrupted backup file and it took Iphone tech support and I three hours to figure out what was wrong. Eventually we wiped the phone clean and started from scratch and activated it as a new iPhone and manually synched everything. Fixed the problem, but a lot of headaches. Most times there will be no issues, but you'll notice the people who write the software always write a nice disclaimer basically saying good luck, you're on your own, we take no responsibility... There is a reason for that. I honestly just don't see the point right now of having it jailbroken. Most apps are free or 99 cents. /shrug |

You have gotten some bad info. Blackra1n will jailbreak ALL iPhones, not just the 3 Gs. The tethered reboot is only for a 3 Gs with a specific bootloader which was not installed on new 3 Gs phones until around Sept. 2009. My 3 Gs is jailbroken, and does not require a tethered reboot. Neither do either of my 3 G phones. There are a ton of good reasons and programs that jailbreaking make available. Backgrounding is one of the best. I quit using my XM radio because I run Pandora for streaming music, and I can run it while using my phone for other applications. SBSettings is another app that makes your phone much easier to configure without having to step through several SETUP menus to switch things like brightness, 3G, WiFi, E, Airplane mode, Bluetooth, etc. Jailbreaking takes about a minute to do, and you can go back to your original setup if for some reason you don't like it. |
