Anyone have a holster for their 1911 made of this stuff. If so, ya like it, hate it. What are the pros and cons? Lemme have it. AB |

got one for my Sig. Getting a Kimber for a duty weapon, and plan on getting one for it too. easy to wear, clean, and tough. The drawback is accellerated holster wear on your piece, feels like plastic (I like the look/feel/smell of leather), My IWB is less than comfortable, and when I left my piece under the seat of my car while going into the DA's office for an hour I found the kydex had melted slightly and didn't retain my weapon as well. Both are by blade-tech, and I have had no similar problems with my OWB. I am willing to chalk it up to different lots of kydex. pat |

I have two for my G30, a paddle and IWB. Also mag, Leatherman, and flashlight pouches. With a sheath for my Oyabun and a pouch for 30 round AR mags. Never seen "accelerated wear", a Kydex holster contacts far less of the gun than any of my leather holsters. You can't really compress Kydex against the gun like you can with leather and Kydex doesn't pick up grit like leather does. We all know what leather impregnated with grit is...a strop. Adding to that I know the owner and senior staff, they're all stand up guys. Blade Tech is a good company. I've turned down jobs with them a couple of times. Lumpy's right on with his evaluation of the Mikes and Fobus junk. Brittle and poorly constructed. |

I've got Ky-Tac, Blade-Tech, and FIST for a bunch of different guns (and some Fobus - which to be technical, isn't kydex). If this holster is going to be used OWB, thicker is better. What I like about my OWB kydex holsters is the little "click" you get when the gun is fully holstered. If it's IWB you can get by with a lot thinner material. All holsters will wear a gun's finish, even leather. Kydex won't absorb sweat and condensation and transfer it to your gun like leather does. I'd give leather the nod for comfort, and kydex the nod for draw speed, but neither one wins outright for retention. |

I don't have a 1911, but I have a fist kydex holster and several fobus holsters (like Dolomite said, those are some other kind of plastic). I mostly use the fobus holsters for range holsters if I want to carry on my belt as most of my real holsters are IWB, but I haven't had any problems with them. Anyway like the other guys said, they can be made a lot thinner and are more resisitant to sweat than leather, but I wonder whether they would wear the finish off the pistol quicker. I don't worry about it as I mostly carry Glocks, but some people are more concerned about the cosmetic appearance of their carry gun, if that's the case I would be somewhat concerned about using a kydex holster. I recently got a kydex magazine holster from Comp tac that allows you to carry an AR mag on your belt, similar to a pistol mag carrier. It seems pretty nice, though the kydex is pretty think, not like the FIST-that's paper thin and I really like it, but it seems to have developed a hairline crack in about a year's worth of use. I am considering using this material for my CCW weapon, as mentioned by the gentleman earlier, I have no concerns of finish wear on the 1911. I have been using Galco holsters, but they are big and bulky, and the 1911 is already a good sized package. I bought an Uncle Mikes double mag "pouch" yesterday, and it seems very deployable, and it adjusts for mag retention, which I like. It does look like I will NOT get this particular brand for the holster though. Thanks for the input gentlemen! AB |
