Hello, im putting together a long range precision rifle. Starting with a remington M700 PSS in 300 mag.  I need some help selecting optics and rings.  I want something with a BDC.  Does the Leupold LRM1 3.5-10 have BDC cams for 300 winchester?  Also, what are the best rings and bases to use on this rifle?  Has anyone used the ultimate sniper stock by John Plaster?  What did you think of it?

I have had excellent results out to 600 yds (longest range available locally) with a Shepherd range-finding scope on a .308 700. I have heard but have not personally experienced some spotty things about their customer service. However, the device itself works exactly as as advertised, and I mean exactly. I would buy one tomorrow, and only mention the customer service rumor because you're an arfcommer and therefore entitled to full disclosure.

Get the LR M1 16X40 with mildots. Since you will be sohoting very far, you'll enjoy the extra magnification.

As far as rings go, try the ones from Badger Ordinance .

I've got twp Shepherd P2's but go look at the HORUS system BEFORE you decide on anything!

Here's the DEMO:  http://www.horusvision.com/hv.cfm?pg=demogame

On the Leupold you want look at the Mark4 LRT M3.

The M3 has the BDC and the M1 has the 1/4min click.

Hope that helps.

As a designated gunsmith and ammo r&d tech, I can offer some assistance to your questions.

As mentioned before, the Leupold M3 scopes feature the BDC. It does have the .300 win cam, but it is velocity and bullet specific (IIRC 190gr Sierra BTHPM @ 2900fps out of a 24" barrel). Since the current model PSS feature 26" barrels this will result in the velocity being up approx 100fps pushing the bullet to 3000 fps. The solution to this is to either handload .300win down to the 2900fps velocity (which totally defeats the purpose of the extra 2" of barrel, or to make your own custom BDC cam. The other thing that you must keep in mind is that the M3 scopes, in order to allow for quick elevation adustments, are 1 click = 1" compared to the standars 1 click = 1/4". It is something to think about if you want to make a target gun. If this is the case I would go with the M1.

If you go the route of using the M3 with ammo specs to the BDC cam, you must use the Mark 4 bases and rings for the BDC to work correctly. Using the M1 in the Mark 4 bases/rings, as it is not a BDC scope, will give an extra 12 moa in elevation. By the way the LR 3.5-10 scopes have 65 moa of adjustment, which should after zeroing, still have enough left for shooting to at least 1200 yds. That is if you are into that kind of thing.

Although I haven't tried it, I have heard mixed reviews on the US stock.

Peace be with you.
