did Big Army stop issuing these to IET recruits?
they look and (apparently are) a shitload warmer/ nicer looking than these Gore-Tex coats

I had a buddy that was college ops OCS go through Basic last Fall or so.  He got one, but didn't get a liner.

The "modern" Goretex isn't that great by itself, but underarmor, polypro, an ACU top, a Fleece, and a Goretex will keep you decently warm.

Yes they did... it's new... couple months old. Gore-tex ain't too bad... it keeps me warm :)

I pretty certain the big Army still issues them.  I got mine in the National Guard early this year, my liner will be in it shortly.

I have privates still showing up with them.

The guys that shipped "over the tracks" right before us  got them. We lucked out.

you talking about the ones with the hood in the collar?  I know that my OSUT cycle was one of the last to get them, all the new recruits didn't get them instead they got an extra set of summer boots and maybe an ACU parka....they were issued them with their TA50 so they may have to turn them back in

I'll have to double check to see exactly what mine is but I think it may be what you're talking about.  We never got issued any of the ECWS stuff...I'd kill for one of those fleece jackets though.  Gonna be spending a lot of time out in the field soon and I'd kill to have a fleece jacket with me more than rain gear which I didn't get issued

We got issued gore-tex jackets, no liners. You have to layer under it to get warm.

That's all randy-dandy....cept my last 2 COC's basically gave us the big ole FU whenever we wanted to wear our snivel gear.  I can't stand some of the asinine rules that the TRADOC Army has.

Yeah we got extra boots instead of the Field Jacket... goretex was issued with the TA50 but I sure as hell ain't turning that bitch in "I DONT KNOW DS! IT JUST WENT POOF!" :D

Guess not.  Now I will get even more crap from the new guys about still having and wearing a BDU field jacket.

I actually lucked out and got a transitionary Goretex a couple years ago.  Its the same exact specs as the old BDU Goretex, just its in ACU and its .Mil issued so its in regs!  Much better than the new one i got recently, though the new one is more packable.

The Goretex shell was never meant to replace the field jacket without a liner of some sort. It has no insulating properties at all. Without a fleece, polypro, or some other layer it's just a raincoat.

That never stopped the countless retard E-3's I came across on guard duty shivering like a Chihuahua trying to shit a peach pit who thought just because it was a gore-tex it would keep them warm.

Goretex'll stop wind, but layers are necessary for cold weather.

I've nearly caught hypothermia in a Humvee turret in a sudden cold rainstorm finding that out the hard way.

One of the silk type underlayers or fleece is generally good for up to about 40F, after that add another layer.

I know. I don't know whether to laugh because they're that dumb, or cry because they're that ignorant. Some you can get to see the light (or the heat), some just continue on in shivering ignorance.

There is not fleece that comes with the ECWS system.  You get green pimp fur.

It clumps up in short order and looks like hell.

Black fleece>Green.

The black has better wind resistance (which still aint much).  The green . . . lets wind cut right through you.  If you get the ECWS system, though, you will also get a windbreaker which (just) fits over the green fleece.  If I can find one of the smooth green fleece jackets I will buy it if it comes in under $100, maybe a little more.

My son claims the black one has zero protection from wind and definitely prefers the  discontinued:

I'm not 100% sure, my son is at West Point, they have different uniform rules and I thought I heard him say they weren't allowed to wear them anymore.

All my WP info is 6 months old but...

We wore the black fleece as an outer garment, which is a pretty big no-no on every other post.  I saw very, very few foliage green fleeces there, and they were all worn by officers.  2006 was issued the old BDU field jackets.  07, 08, 09, 10, and 11 were issued the old (aka good) BDU Goretex jackets, which we wore with ACUs until 2012 showed up.  They were only issued the new (AKA shitty) ACU Goretex jackets.  As a result, we had to wear the old school black fleeces.  I never even saw an ACU field jacket till I got up here to Knox.

I just got issued a black fleece and pant set from Fort Knox CIF.  That said, it's a TRADOC unit and not authorized for outerwear.  I haven't heard of a wear-out date yet.

The ECWS system has a ridiculous amount of layers and is supposed to be customizable. I was issued a huge box with everything with under armour cold wear style undershirts up to a freakin' bear suit that makes me look like the stay puff marshmallow man. If you can't find a combo of stuff in that box to keep you warm, there isn't much the army can do for you.

Weird, I see people rollin around Ft Bragg with both green and black fleece's on as outerwear.  I just want another warm layer for field use, I have other ways of keeping warm when I'm stuck around the barracks

A real bear suit? I haven't seen one of those in awhile... since about 2000 or so. They were wonderfully warm, but cut funny and weren't very flexible.

This appears to be close to what is issued with the ECWS GEN III.  It is monstrously warm.  -5* F and I put on the Top to walk to chow, maybe 1/8th mile, I was sweating by the time I got there.

ETA:  I think what I got has more pouf than this one, though.  Or it did, before it spent the past two years in the bottom of a box.

Great to see another West Pointer here Pegasus6, even though I'm an old enlisted Marine  My son is at West Point Prep this year and is part of Class of 2014.  I know he (and 3 other CC's) got his/their ACU jackets from working the supply room at Ft. Monmouth and their NCO TAC.  He and another CC wore them (ACU Jacket) at the Parents Weekend football game and I personally saw the Commandant give them hell for ~not wearing the black fleese...even though it was snowing!

They are a great looking Jacket and functional too!

Good luck at Knox, I guess you branched Armor, my son wants armor too! Huah!
