How do I determine if my mauser is a large ring or a small ring?

96 or 98? 98 most of teh time is large ring.. Except the turkish which is a large ring with small ring threading..

The diameter of a large ring receiver (up by the barrel) should be around 1.410".  A small ring is supposed to be 1.3".  If you have the barrel off, small ring threads are supposed to be .980" major diameter and the large ring are 1.1".  I think there are some exceptions if you get into magnum actions.  The above comment is also correct.

To give credit where it's due, I got this from Kuhnhausen's book on mauser actions.  I don't really know that off the top of my head
