All,

Planning a trip here to explore. At one point I saw some pics that someone had of these huge spines you could drive up and down. Any idea what these are called?? Want to make sure I am heading to the right area..

Thanks,

Can't help you with that, but I was in the Moab area last month.  Check out Goblin Valley State Park, and go canyoneering (if the weather is safe).  It was a blast.

The term you are looking for is "hogback" or a "fin". The famous one at Moab is "lions back", and is on private property. "Baby lions back" is near there in the Sand Flats recreation area.

You will have a blast, you can do and see a lot in a stock 4x4. Be sure to air your tires down or the washboard roads will beat you to death.

I highly recommend this book
Check it out before you go and get an idea of what you want to see. Then try to plot things out on a map, there are some great maps of the area available. It's a big area and you don't want to waste your time running back and forth between sites.

I could not agree with this more.  I met friends out there this summer.  I have a lightly modded FJ and they are hard core Rubicon guys.  That book was invaluable in my trail choices. Made it real easy to decide when to drive and when to pack the camera and just ride along.  That place is incredible.

Get the book, be sure of the condition of your rig, don't wheel alone, have fun.   Lion's back is pointless, to me at least, plenty of more interesting places to go.  If coming from the east on I-70, plan your fuel stop accordingly and take highway 128 along the river and into town.

Lions Back is closed...

Go run "Hells Revenge" for a good starter trail.

What are you driving anyhow?

Land Rover Disco FTW!!!!!  Everything else sucks in comparison....except maybe a LR Defender or Range Rover.

ETA I remember doing some wheeling right outside a little town called Toquerville, UT, which is not far from Moab IIRC.  We hit it after Moab enroute to St George.  It was an amazing time, you're going to have a blast.

+1   There is a video of a guy and lady in an old Blazer, they are on there way down lions back when there brakes go out, and it flies down the rock, and off the side & nose dives into the sand.
