need a cheap chinese knockoff or used legit android tablet. I've seen 7" models for under $100 but they don't have gps. I just need it to run a gps app and ballistics software. if it can run a browser well enough to view wireless cameras placed near my targets, great. everything else is gravy.
so what's a cheap droid tablet with gps that doesn't totally suck? gps bluetooth receivers are hundreds of bucks.... lame. so alternately, can a droid tablet use the gps of a nearby smartphone via bluetooth? |
| No such tablet exists. In order to use GPS you have to have cellular service or wifi (or satellite service in the case of sole GPS receivers). Just download a GPS app on your android phone and download strelok. Strelok allows you to put in and save all data, temp, ect and calculate ballistics from there. |
| nexus7 or better known as the N7 is the closest i can think of |

GPS itself doesn't need wifi or a network connection. It does, however, require the reception of timing signals from the GPS constellation. Many smartphone/tablet implementations require (or at least prefer) some sort of network connectivity. |

The unit has to have some access to contact the GPS satellites either by wifi, cell company network connection or satellite service directly to the GPS constellation. No tablet that I know of is cheap that can do that (I think Verizon offers some android tablets with network service, but not cheap). Best bet is phone with GPS and strelok IMHO... |

The easiest solution is to get the Nexus 7 ($100 used) and use the ballistics program on that in concert with the gps from your phone. What exactly do you need gps for anyways?
If you're using it for distance, they are only accurate to within 15 feet (5 yards) which means up to 30 feet (10 yards) if marking 2 points. You can buy a cheap range finder that is accurate to within +/- 1 yrd. Or you can buy fancy ones that do the cosine calculations for you based on angle approximations. If you want to get high tech, gps is not the way IMHO unless you're shooting outside of the range of modern range finders... Edit: the 95% confidence level of current standard gps receivers is actually 7.8 meters, which means you could be off >17 yards if marking 2 points. Of course, high quality gps is much better... source |
