[ARCHIVED THREAD] - odd etrex legend C problem

I encountered an odd etrex legend C problem yesterday.

wouldn't power on via battery.

wouldn't power up via dc cable

was able to do data transfer via usb cable

thought it was the batteries going dead.

brought unit back to the hotel, charged batteries over night.

still, batteries don't power unit up, even tried some alakalines I had on reserve...no dice.

It will power up with the USB cable but NOT WITH batteries in it

I can scroll throught the screens, I can adjust the lighting but when I go to 'set' the lighting, it powers off.

any ideas that I can check from a hotel room?

Try a hard reset?

The newer etrex units (venture, legend, and vista) with the "Click Stick" use different keys to accomplish these tasks but the idea is the same. Holding the click stick down and then powering up will enter the test screen while holding the "page" key down and the "click stick" down and then powering up will reset the unit. You will be prompted with an "are you sure?" message. On these units holding down the "find" button in addition to the others will avoid the "are you sure" message. Hold the buttons for 5 seconds to clear the unit.

Note that the extra key sequence may be an even bigger master reset but this is not clear to me. A master reset may be needed to clear the unit if you have left the batteries out for a long period of time and the unit comes up with the wrong year. Later versions of the firmware have supposedly addressed this problem. To continue after a reset click here.

thanks for that link... however, reset doesn't seem to be taking place...

I have a Vista C - but I'm tagging this in case it happpens.

Sorry RED_5, I have no idea other than calling Garmin and

talking to one of their techs.

Try visiting Garmin's website. They might have a FAQ / support section.

resolved, operator error!

batteries in wrong. I'm embarrassed and ashamed as this is my bread and butter and I should have checked it first (or early on).

please learn from my mistake, it's the only reason I've shared my embarrassment with you.

I love my garmin. It's 100% better than any of the Magellan's I've owned or used at work.
