I know you can request, but I have to assume that washing dishes in the chow hall is not a plum assignment recruits are chasing. Is the Pogue/REMF hate based in actual resentment or is it good natured bashing or a mix of both? |

Not to be a smart ass, but the guys behind the wire get combat pay as well? Is it merely being in the theater that you earn it? Sorry for the dumb questions, just no experience with this. |

Is the Pogue/REMF hate based in actual resentment or is it good natured bashing or a mix of both? In the Army, 99% of recruits are 'contracted' for a specific MOS... It is very, very rare that you meet someone who did not sign for what they are doing... For those who don't like their MOS, they can change at 1st reenlistment (hence, my DUMPING helo repair for Armor). |

Except change your MOS & go back as something a little less Fobbit-ish... <<<-=––- 15G -> 19K |

I thought there was some kind of aptitude test or something and they assigned accordingly. I tried to get into the service academies when I was a senior in high school but was told I couldn't meet physical requirements with my hearing loss. |

I guess if you look at it that way, I don't have much place bitching about the pogues when i get back from boot camp. |

I tried to get into the service academies when I was a senior in high school but was told I couldn't meet physical requirements with my hearing loss. No, we don't have MOSes for those 2... Contractors do alot of that shit now (gate guard, cooking, cleaning, etc) - and the rest gets done by details (your MOS is 11B (Infantry) but today, you'll be polishing floors (E-1 to E-3, maybe 4) or supervising floor polishing (E5+, maybe E-4s too))... There is the ASVAB (aptitude test) but the Combat Arms fields are not beyond the aptitude reach of most recruits... The Academies are a whole 'nother story, as those 3 institutions are among the top colleges in the country, and are extremely hard to get into... Graduate, and you've got a career officer's life ahead of you, for the taking (Academy graduates (along with ROTC & OCS folks) start as 2nd Lieutenants).... |

When I was deployed, maybe 40% of the people I ran into were doing their MOS. The rest were nothing but pawns being moved from job to job. Should have been more specific: 'who did not sign up for their current MOS'... Being detailed to something else (Uh, derr... Tanks are too heavy for the roads here, so grab a rifle & hop on that HMMWV) is another story all together... We had both folks who got royally screwed (15T, Blackhawk guys stuck in 15S Kiowa Maintainer slots - no flying/gunning for them) and folks who wanted nothing more than to be detailed to something else (like me) told that we were needed for our specific MOS & would do nothing else the whole time... You guys (13Bs) kind of got screwed with MP & Infantry duty in IRQ, from what I heard... And of course, my new MOS (Armor) gets stuck as 'provisional infantry' - especially in A-stan due to the road issue... |

Most the time I'd tell them to fuck off. Most the time they did. Every once in a while they would go to my chain of command. They would listen, and then have the talk with me. What was the talk, you ask? It wasn't "wear you PT belt right," or "make sure your eye pro is on." No. It was "Stop telling senior NCO's to fuck off"'

Thanks, I was a little more familiar with the Academies as I was going for Annapolis and probably would have gotten in if not for the physical DQ. I had the grades, the athletics and extra-curriculars, went to the right prep school and my Congressman and our former Republican Senator were on board. In my graduating class we had a West Point, Annapolis and Air Force Academy appointment as well as one or two students who went to the prep school in New Jersey for a year before going to West Point. Not bad for a class of less than 70. One was thrown out of the Air Force Academy on an Honors Violation. Got caught sneaking back on campus drunk and lied. The morning he was set for his hearing he went to the local air port, rented a Cessna and buzzed the campus before landing the plane on one of the gold courses - at least that was what I was told by a cadet a year ahead of him who also went to our prep school. This was in his junior year, he got stuck with the bill after he was expelled. The guy who went to West Point went to Georgetown Medical after graduating and is now a surgeon deployed to the Middle East. Not sure what happened to the guy who got my appointment to Annapolis. |
